Is it possible to get a public school job without going through a recruiter??
Has anyone done it? |

Yes, it is possible. Some schools and some area (provincial/county) education offices, hire directly. Seoul Metropolitan is one which was doing it a year or two ago. I think they still are. My county (Changnyoung), out here in nowheresville, does it.
Are you thinking of getting into (back into?) the ed game? |

Yes... thinking about it.
I never really was an English teacher, except for the... ah-hem... P ones I did and the 10 months I taught in a hagwon cos a friend needed cheap labour.
I will just do it if the offer is right... otherwise it's just going to be a waste of my time.. |

| So no one else knows if I could just go to a school next to where I live and ask if they wanted a foreign, native English teacher?? |

That would likely just create confusion. I know Derrek has some sort of list of public schools and has some ideas of how to go about contacting them for this sort of thing, but it seems a few snyde remarks directed at Canadians and the mods overwhealmed whatever help he was willing to offer people...
At any rate, I think the school boards would be the ones to contact. |

I think it's worth a shot. The worst they can do is say 'no'.
One of the best jobs I found here was by going door-to-door. I just walked in, said "Here I am! Hire me". And they did. Stayed 4 years.
Maybe contact the English teacher there and ask her/him if the school wants a native speaker, or if they know of one that does. There is a big drive on right now to place one of us in every school in the country.
I say, Go for it!
And good luck. |

| I got mine through the Gangnam-gu office. They were hiring for Gangnam schools and paid pretty good too. Don't know if they're still hiring though. It was in September. |

| Some recruiters are passing up the Gyonngi-do public jobs now. I know this for a fact, because I heard some talking about it once. Gyonngi pays the recruiters half of the going rate, and won't pay for like a year, depending on if the teacher stays or not. |

I've just come to the realisation that the job I was looking at, the *public school* job that I was looking at here in Daejeon, is in fact an after-school programme (this is my deduction... why else would they want someone to work 11-5, otherwise?)..
How common is this?
Are there no *mainstream* teaching jobs out there?! Are these hard to come by? |

| Public Schools pay according to experience and education on a scale from 1.7 to 2.2 million Won per month. The top-end salaries go to teachers with at least 2 years teaching experience and a higher degree or certification such as a TESOL certificate. Teaching at schools outside major uban areas will net you an addional 100,000 Won. Foreign teachers who teach at 2 or more schools in this town are given a car and 100,000 Won a month for gas and insurance. A recruiter can get you a deal like this, so you ought to do at least as well on your own. |

| not trying to brag, but look around because I was offered much more than 2 mill. The low end for the teachers the Gangnam office was placing was 2.4. This might be a special circumstance though. Is there anyone else in a public school getting comparable? |

Same here. Do you live near Yeoksam station? I got hired in November 2004 though. |
