| Just wondering if you have ever failed a uni student? If so, was there any backlash from the student or the school? |

| At our uni students can only fail if they are absent 8 or more times. We don't have the option of failing our students. A 'D' is the best we can do. |

How many times do you have them in a semester?
Can't fail them except for their absenses? That's not right. |

32 times a semester....the uni rule is miss 25% and you fail...other than that we have a fairly strict curve to follow....
Never liked curves...and hate not being able to fail the students that do nothing.... |

Yes, I failed several.
The students didn't approach me. They went direct to the Korean head of the English department. He told me to pass them. I refused to 'adjust' their marks and told the head that he would have to do that as it was against my principles. He promptly did so. Obviously he didn't have any principles !!!
End of story !!! |

I've failed a lot. No problem yet.
If they fail...they can retake the course, but if they get a D- they can't (at least at my Uni).
If they seem nice I give them an option of a D- or an F. If they are asses I ask them. Then I give them the opposite of what they asked for. |

At mine it's D+.
As far as failing, the school policy is that if they fail, they fail. Of course, for Engilsh they can re-take the class. |

I never thought to inquire about whether my university has such a rule or not. I'd rather not know, actually. I already spend enough time deciding if I should bump students up a letter if they are short of a point or two. |

Yes.
At my school, the secretary will just get a new password for my account with the online database if they "have" to make changes. I've lost count of how many times my password has changed. No real backlash yet.
Its nice to know its not just my school thats assinine. |

Always remember how much a degree in Korea is worth internationally.
Not much.
Now you know why. |

I'm not disputing what you're saying. I've even said the same thing.
But where do you get your info? I admit that I have said it based on what others have said and anecdotal evidence (personal observation), but is there a source that says Korean universities are not worth much?
I'm not being argumentative; I just want to know if I have been perpetuating a mean rumor. (I tend to think not - look at Hwang and the reception that the western KAIST president received - but, again, a quick search of the web hasn't disclosed any real evidence, that I'm right.) |
