Hi
I have lots of experience with the younger students, but have just been handed over some classes of middle school students who I am teaching storybooks to. They are all abridged versions of classic novels, but the workbooks that go with the books are random and uninspiring, and I am dreading being faced with those bored and disinterested faces every day!!

I really want the kids to get excited by the stories, please, if you have any ideas about how to inspire the students, let me know - it will be much appreciated!

The classes are small and the students are reluctant to join in anything that makes them stand out, but there has to be a way to make them enjoy this.......

You're one of those 'Deborah' girls?

Just last weekend, I happened to notice a boxed set of videos and structured workbooks/readers for films such as Wallace and Grommit in YP Bookstore. If you find it hard to get the kids stimulated, a video always seems to improve things, right? If they're more 'intellectual' or 'mature,' you could get something like the Friends video or other movies and downloads the scripts to match (script-o-rama.com should have them). Then, alongside working through the English script, you can make drama improvs and a multitude of other things beyond the regular reader books.
