Hi,
Can you guys recommend some nice (at least by korean standards;) cities for me seek out? I am sensitive to pollution. I heard Daejeon is fairly clean and has fresh air. Any suggestions?
Also, the water presented a problem in the past. I used to go out and buy all bottled water and was still having reactions--just to find out the local store down the street was filling thier bottles with tap water. Can you guys recommend ways of getting fresh water (from a certain company, in my apartment-you know those big jug types that people have).
Thanks!!!

In my experience every city is similar in pollution levels, Daejeon would be the same as any other city in the country.....
If you are sensitive to pollution the countryside would be your best bet |

Jeollanam-do, but not Gwangju, is probably the cleanest province in Korea. If youre sensitive to pollution, any city of one million-plus people will be equally bad. Gangwon-do is rural by Korea standards, but seems affected by Seouls pollution. Be careful with smaller towns as well. There are quite a few towns in Korea that are completely dependent on the LG or Hyundai chemical plant nearby. These towns are usually worse than Seoul in terms of pollution. Think grey water, green skies, and six-fingered children.
Jeju-do might be relatively clean as well. |

I recently spent three years in Chung-ju (now sometimes called Choong-ju) and loved it. Clean air - about 100 minutes to Seoul by bus - but a clean nice little community. AND, very best of all, a very active teacher community of about 30-40 people who were quick to adopt and help others. Good social life.
Chung-ju would get my vote. It is a city of about 200-250,000 ringed by mountains.
Ask at work to arrange REAL bottled water. It's not cheap but it beats the garbage that comes out of the tap.

Everywhere on the peninsula seems a bit smokey. Perhaps you have to try and get over to Jeju-Do. By many accounts that's the best you can get to clean air in Korea.
If you've had such a sensitivity to Korean environment before, wouldn't it be preferable to look elsewhere for a job instead of punishing yourself? Just my thought. |
