Always remember how much a degree in Korea is worth internationally.

Not much.

Now you know why.

I'm not disputing what you're saying. I've even said the same thing.

But where do you get your info? I admit that I have said it based on what others have said and anecdotal evidence (personal observation), but is there a source that says Korean universities are not worth much?

I'm not being argumentative; I just want to know if I have been perpetuating a mean rumor. (I tend to think not - look at Hwang and the reception that the western KAIST president received - but, again, a quick search of the web hasn't disclosed any real evidence, that I'm right.)

The Western president wasn't liked because of his plans to hire foreigners so that they make up 10-15% of all the researchers at KAIST.

Most degrees aren't worth much internationally. Outside of a few countries in Asia and the Middle East, our BA's would earn us peanuts (if we were teaching English.)

Ya, in Europe, my EU passport has better chances of me earning more than a degree. In Thailand, being blond, blue eyed and not into molesting children lands you more pay.

I fail students all the time who deserve it. We meet once a week for 15 weeks and if they miss 25% (4 classes) then they automatically fail. If they have at least tried to do everything I will probably pass them unless they are hopeless.

At mine it's D+.

As far as failing, the school policy is that if they fail, they fail. Of course, for Engilsh they can re-take the class.

My school has a wierd rule - there is a quota of A students (15% - 30%) and B students (30 % - 40%) but if you get C+ you are stuck with it. Anything less than C+ the student can re-take the class. I decide if the class in general has been good or bad and then decide which end of the quota I will fill. I usually tell them this at the beginning of the course as it helps motivate them. Students with a natural (or artificial) C+ can petition me to lower it so they can take it again. Makes marking a fairly pointless adventure into creative mathematics but so be it. I can't change things.

I fail about 80 students per semester.

Whoa, now that's a lot of students! I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that to them. We have to be "popular" "like entertainers" don't you know?

I've never been more in favor of the in loco parentis doctrine as I am now. This certainly would not work at a hagwon but a university, definately.

At my university, I've been told we have to be careful who we fail because some of them have "connections" to the university via their parents (money). They can miss every class and do no work and they still have to pass the course. This is what I'm told. I feel sorry for students like this because they'll never learn what it means to experience pride and confidence on one's own work. How will they ever succeed (without their parents)? What a shame.

Failed one today. He's been absent for 3 weeks (out of 6)! I told his classmates to tell him not to come back. Guess I'll be seeing him when he's a senior, as Freshman English is a required course!
