Poll: Most Open to Letting Immigrants Stay By NANCY BENAC, Associated Press Writer

A slim majority of Americans are open to allowing undocumented workers to obtain some sort of temporary legal status to remain in the United States, with stronger support for the idea among Democrats, younger adults and more educated Americans, a new poll finds.
Overall, 56 percent of Americans favor offering illegal immigrants a shot at some kind of legal status; roughly two-thirds of those ages 18-34 like the idea and an equal share of those with a college education agree, the AP-Ipsos survey found.
While Democrats were more likely to support temporary worker status, with 62 percent favoring the idea, even among Republicans there was majority support, by a narrower 52 percent, according to the poll.
The AP-Ipsos survey of 1,003 adults was conducted Tuesday through Thursday, as debate swirled in Congress over a proposal that would legalize many illegal immigrants in the United States and expand guest worker programs for an estimated 400,000 immigrants each year.
Two-thirds of Americans think illegal immigrants fill jobs that most Americans don't want, the poll found.
But the survey found greater ambiguity on whether illegal immigrants are good or bad for American society, on balance. Fifty-one percent said illegal immigrants mostly make a contribution to society, and 42 percent said they were mostly a drain.
Likewise, there was deep division on how serious a crime it should be enter the country illegally. Fifty-one percent thought it should be considered a "minor offense" and 47 percent considered it a "serious criminal offense."
Americans were skeptical that erecting a fence along the border with Mexico would reduce the number of illegal immigrants — two-thirds doubted it would work.
The survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

Uhhh... not really. My guess is that the polls were done either in California, New York, or Texas. Where the question "Yo Hablo Engles?" is heard and or said on a daily basis! I and my views are in the majority. BTW the part about those with higher educations believing that illegals are ok is bull. I had an interesting conversation with 3 PHD's and 2 people with MS's behind their name just the other night over drinks (about 3 bottles of wine with cocktails) and all but 1 agreed with me! To add to it, 3 of them were democrats! Go figure. It seems common sense triumps!
I'll take personal experience over crap polls anyday! |

I have to wonder how ignorant or uninformed people are in general in terms of the immgration issues that face the US.
Which is why I really question people that would say they support allowing people to stay (including children of illegals born here).
I'm suprised how conservative I am on this issue. |

Too many people are ignorant of the issue. They see only the percieved contributions that the illegals make but they don't look at the negatives and they don't look 20 years down the line. These illegals come to the States looking for a "better life". Let them stay, and soon their looking for what legal citizens are looking for...a high paying job, 9-5 working conditions, and a scholarship for their kids. They change their spots once they get what they want. Look at the illegal's 2nd generation... They ain't cleaning the streets my friend. Wait, there's more!
They're the so called minority right? Well their kids have and advantage for those scholorships don't they... it's called the color of their skin and their parents lack of ability to pay. They also get preferential treatment in college entrance!!! "Poor illegal minority. Here let me help! I'll just take the chances of a legal citizen's child to attend our great college, along with his scholarship, and give it to you! I don't care that the real citizen's kid has higher grades, an SAT score in the 95 percentile, and was the president of his senior class. You're underpriviledged  "
They'll be writing our paychecks in 100 years if we don't stop it NOW! A helping hand is one thing but down right theft is another!!! |

The immigration bill now under consideration in the Senate would grant even a broader amnesty to illegal aliens than similar legislation did in 1986, conservatives say, and would make hundreds of thousands of illegal residents eligible for in-state tuition at public colleges and universities.
"It should be called 'No Illegal Alien Left Behind,'?" said Sen. Jeff Sessions, Alabama Republican.
In 1986, Congress granted amnesty to 2.7 million illegal aliens. Current legislation would allow an estimated 11 million illegal aliens to continue working in the U.S. while applying for full citizenship.

WASHINGTON - The government plans to crack down ever harder on employers who harbor and hire illegal immigrants, pursuing companies that ignore the law so they can exploit cheap labor.
"We are going to move beyond the current level of activity to a higher level in each month and year to come," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday. He pledged to "come down as hard as possible" on violators. |

Doesn't take much.
How long did it take for Europeans to wrestle the lands away from the natives?.. this could be said for Australia, North America, etc.
Its inevitable the latin influx.. maybe should open the doors more widely for europeans and asians to at least keep a lot more diversity.. |

It's hardly a reconquista. They're fleeing Mexico because it is poor and backwards. They aren't taking the rich jobs. Lastly, only half of those are Mexican, and almost 10% are Puerto Rican.

This kind of view of finite labor should be confined to Europe. There aren't a finite number of jobs, nor are there a finite number of service jobs. Some people in France believed a few decades ago that if someone worked 5 less hours, that would be 5 more hours for someone else. Ask one of the many healthy American entrepreneuers what is wrong with that logic.
I agree that there are too many Mexicans coming to the US, and its a serious problem, but your logic just doesn't add up. |
