WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A teenager who used a microwave to kill a pet budgie he stole from a school classroom has been sent to prison for nine months.
Ashley Daldy, 18, pleaded guilty to eight charges of burglary and one of cruel treatment of an animal in the North Island city of Hamilton, the Waikato Times newspaper reported Tuesday.
Prosecutors told Hamilton District Court Daldy had broken into the school where he was once a pupil on three occasions, stealing the bird, computer equipment and a video.
He later put the budgie in a microwave oven.
Judge Anne McAloon said Monday killing the bird was a ``particularly nasty offence" but the eight burglaries were more serious.
"The worst part of the offending in our collective opinion was what he did to the bird," Hamilton West School head Catherine McLeod told the newspaper.
"That had huge repercussions for the little kids," she said. |

The headline writer for AP kind of hyped this story, didn't he? The kid was jailed for 'serial' burlary. And rightly so.
No, he shouldn't have nuked the parakeet. Some kids that torture animals grow up to do nasty things to other living things. This kid needs professional evaluation for that aspect of his behavior. Imprisonment for repeated burglary seems appropriate. Maybe his roomie will be the NZ equivalent of Budg.....Bubba.
PS: I thought Hamilton was kind of a nice place. |

Why the amusement? Call me humourless, but microwaving a budgie is simply horrific. |

Whats really sick is that rapists and other serious offences get similar or more lenient sentences than this guy. The New Zealand justice system seems to be really contradictory. |

Agreed. And I personally could have done without seeing this thread in the first place. |

When I visited New Zealand, Hamilton was BY FAR the lamest, most boring city I stayed in..
I don't blame the kid.. probably bored out of his skull there... |

Did anyone hear about the video recently of a Chinese woman killing a cat with her stiletto? It got quite a response in Korea and she had her nursing licence taken away. |

I know!
Just because the title is "Teen jailed for microwaving budgie" doesn't mean that I expect to read about the cruel treatment of an animal when I click on it. How about a little warning instead of being so vague. |

I was thinking of a headline more like, "Sick animal abuse case (Warning: extremely disturbing content)." Then we could choose to open up the thread if we haven't already heard enough of those stories. The existing headline forces us to read the story whether we want to or not. |

yes. the whole damn country's boring as hell if you ask me. went on hols there in '03 and a common cliche involving 'paint' and 'dry' springs to mind.
my mother is teaching in NZ on an exchange at this moment in time and she absolutely hates it - lives in a place called Gisbourn. she teaches at a girls' high school and the little australasian colonials are utterly foul cows from Hades.
New Zealand blows. |

What do you mean it FORCES you?
What is it about "Teen MICROWAVES budgie" that doesnt allude to an animal (budgie) being cruelly killed (microwaved..when would being microwaved be fun?)?
And again, who exactly forced you to read anything? |

I mean that when people browse the list of topics, they don't expect to read such a horrifying story in a headline and deserve a warning. You have completely missed my point -- my complaint is that the headline gives away too much information. A warning would have been more appropriate so that people could open up the post knowing they were about to read something upsetting, rather than being subjected to it as soon as they visit the "Off-Topic Forum." The OP should have shown more sensitivity. |
