Ugly Koreans Banned From Traveling Overseas
By Park Song-wu
Staff Reporter
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said on Tuesday that it was planning to toughen departure control as a way to ban ``ugly Koreans'' from smearing the image of South Korea in foreign countries.
News media used the term ``ugly Koreans'' to describe those who behave in a disorderly fashion in foreign countries. The term has been used frequently amid a rising number of South Koreans being caught for buying sex in Southeast Asian countries.

It made me chuckle, but I don't really like it. You shouldn't really punish people after the fact. And if you punish sex tourists after their sex tourism, it's not really a ban . . . it's just an ordinary sentence.
I wonder if the protesters in Hong Kong or Belgium are "ugly Koreans." |

So does that mean virtually all Koreans over 35 are barred from travelling???
-Like if you have the ajumma perm style, that has got to be a ban right there
-Did you get deductions points for not having eye surgery??? |

Quote #1
A number of South Koreans have recently been caught in Southeast Asian countries for disreputable acts, especially involvement in prostitution.
In July last year, a television network in Vietnam broadcast a news story on the police's apprehension of 28 South Koreans just in a single day for their illegal behavior of buying sex at a Korean-owned saloon.
Another case was found more recently in Shanghai. The police arrested 17 South Koreans in February for their involvement in a ``host bar'' in which men were hired for sexual services. It was recorded the first case of foreigners being caught for running a host bar in China.
Quote #2
``What if I have to go out for business purposes?'' Kang Chan-ho, a resident in Seoul, said. ``I think it's a pointless policy. I can't believe the government is trying to limit our freedom in such a way.''

If writing off your "business" visit to the roomsalon as a legitimate expense is legal, surely you can do the same overseas under the guise of a "morale building" junket or some such.
Can't see this new policy working too well.

BOAT FRENZY
Korean tourists go wild after losing
seats in Oceanjet ferry
Published: 31 January 2006
by Jhunnex Napallacan
Angry at losing their boat seats to chance passengers, about 12 South Korean tourists forced their way into an Oceanjet ferry at the Tagbilaran port in Bohol province, causing a commotion.
The tourists were later made to disembark and failed to make the 5 p.m. return trip to Cebu City.
Oceanjet operations manager Bernard Maraasin said the shipping line was willing to face any inquiry because it had not committed any wrong.
Maraasin said the passengers were to blame for not following the terms of the Libre Balik promo.
He said several passengers, including the Koreans, did not validate their tickets early that day and did not check in 30 minutes before departure as required. Because of that, management allowed chance passengers to board.
The Koreans were made to disembark with a promise by Oceanjet to send another vessel for them and other Cebu-bound passengers as a special trip.
The 80 passengers were not allowed to board the Oceanjet 5 for the 5 p.m. trip for Cebu City. They sneaked past security personnel at the Oceanjet terminal in Tagbilaran and rushed to the vessel still docked 50 meters from the terminal.
Tagbilaran City Coast Guard Commander Jose William Isaga said the Korean tourists broke through a wooden barrier at the gangplank.
Diha gyuy commotion. Hapit ihagbong sa mga Koreano ang ilang gangplank tungod sa kasuko (There was a commotion. The Koreans were so angry they almost dropped the gangplank), said Bohol Governor Aumentado.
The Koreans jumped into the vessel as it was about to depart. But once on board, Coast Guard personnel no longer allowed the vessel to sail.

I rather admire the intent, but imagine what would happen to the ESL industry in Korea if the 7 English-speaking countries decided to try the same thing? There would only be about 12 of us left teaching in the whole country. |

I'm not certain as to what qualifies as 'ugly', and I'm willing to put up with 200 Koreans opening their packets of Kimchi simultaneously at the dinner meal on the THAI air flight to Bangkok, (though I'm still surprised that the oxygen masks don't drop down at that moment; there must be a 'kimchi-hold' mechanism on those things), but I do find them ugly when the plane is still vaulting down the taxiway and the Koreans are already up in the aisle, grabbing their bags from the overhead compartments, making life miserable for the flight attendendants, then dashing and bashing their way to customs, just to get there first. Hopefully, some day, some way, one Korean will learn one manner, and pass it on to the rest. For now, it seems that the traditional obtuseness is being passed on to the next generation; and that I find ugly. Koreans get no respect in SE Asia; their money, yes; themselves, no. |

I really don't like prostitution in any form, but this seems a little screwy.
Are we to believe that the officials drafting this law don't patronize room salons and twisted massage joints with the rest of their peers? |

After reunification they can turn the DMZ into golf courses, then the over 35s will have no reason to travel. |

you forgot to add "...only to hold up everyone else in line because they didn't take the time on the plane to fill in the Health Questionnaire, arrival card, or customs form..... |

Hmmm. So the people who pay for sex are creating a bad image, whereas the people who sell it are fine and dandy? |
