Usually when I read stuff like this I try to reflect on "how does a Canadian high school student think"? Korean hatred for Japan, Korean nationalism, Koreans glossing over historical facts, I find your Canadian youth think in a similar manner. Canadian students would happily nuke America. Canada is a great shining beacon of goodness in the world and America is evil. Tim Hortons makes the best donuts in the world. Canada never enslaved anyone and we were always very kind to our Indians. Of course, I'm comparing the attitudes of Korean government officials and opinion leaders to the minds of 14 year old Canadians. But still. I can grok.
However, I simply can't imagine anyone in Canada of any age out to police the world's textbooks. Geez. |
Quite untrue. Anyone with a lick of sense would know that Krispy Kreme kicks the hell out of tim hortons anyday. Silly Canadians. |

There was an encouraging move by Roh the other day to fess up to the slaughter on Jeju Island. His line of argument seemed to be something like "we can hardly accuse the Japanese of hiding from their history if we're doing it ourselves." |
sorry for my ignorance, but what is the slaughter on jeju island? i am quite curious. |
| Quote: |
The Jeju massacre or the Cheju April 3 massacre happened as a result of suppression against armed rebellion in Jeju island, South Korea, during the period of April 3, 1948 to September 21, 1954.
A complex interplay of guerilla forces, youth groups, police, local and national army together with US presence lead to the situation.
The South Korean provisional government, right-wing under U.S. guidance, conducted nationwide campaigns to root out communists and their sympathizers, which also included some moderates. This caused severe instability around the nation, and in Jeju where communist influence was stronger, many resorted to armed resistance against government action.

Practically the entire island population of 300,000 revolted when the Rhee regime announced an election separate from north Korea.
Of the 300,000 it was said that 200,000 were communists who wanted a reunified Korea based on socialist property relations.

I was unable to find a longer, more in-depth article I read a few months ago (now blocked?), but I found this one. It's an interesting topic. |

you mean circa 1800s?? ill give the koreans whatever historical timeline they say they have....but 5000 years of CIVILIZATION is a big difference....im unsure if it's even 5000 days of that.
and im bothered at how koreans see others taking the mainstream approach on events that are miniscule to them as a 'mistake', since these claims are neither factual nor objective. names and land disputes can be seen as either way. we could even go as far to say that THEY are mistaken about the east sea and takashima since they hold the minority view on the situation.
saying korea was bigger than japan is an actual mistake...and i bet if a foreign textbook made that claim not one korean would clear their throat against it. |
