Apple has released software that lets users run Microsoft's operating system on its computers that use Intel chips.

Called Boot Camp the program lets Mac owners run both Apple's OSX and Microsoft's Windows XP.

A trial version of the software is now available so users can install it. Future versions of Apple's OSX software will include the program.

The release follows efforts by hackers to get Windows XP booting up on Macs that use Intel chips.

Can't wait for Burger King to make Big Macs and Coke to make Pepsi.

Wonder when MS will release OSX? Ex(p)-OSX.

The analogy might better be Burger King giving you a Big Mac coupon after you've purchased a Whopper Meal. I wonder if MS will now make it so one can partition and boot OSX? It wouldn't kill MS to sell Office for Mac suites to PC users who have already bought Office for XP.

I like this quote.

"Hell has frozen over, black is white, two plus two equals five, the whole fabric of the universe has been ripped open."

I've been waiting for this news ever since my first computer, an Apple IIe, became obsolete. The only that prevented me from purchasing another Apple computer was my concerns about the availability of software and games.

I remember long time ago the Amiga used to have both a Mac emulator and a PC emulator. I thought it was a great solution for the "she uses mac, he uses pc" couples. Amiga never really pursued this technology. It was also remarkable Apple never sued them. I asked a PR guy at Commodore once why Mac didn't sue them and he felt they were just too small for Apple to bother.

(Another time I was at some kind of press party for Netcom or something. They had just started service in Canada. I was talking to this uber cute woman and mentioned I saw a picture of Apple's new powerbook. I was like "geez it looks like a toilet lid." Then I'm like "So what do you do?" "I'm a PR person for Apple." Oh. I went home unlaid that night I tell you.)

This is deeply troubling to a Mac user like myself. And I imagine many others. On one hand anything that helps Apple gain marketshare is a positive since it means our favorite computer maker will be around that much longer. On the other hand, as many articles point out, it could mean that other software designers will simply stop making apps for Mac. We're assured that this won't happen, and that it will make it that much easier for people to switch to the Mac who've been wanting to but haven't due to app incompatibility, but it's a kind of a scary time for the Mac community.

One of the reasons PC folk are so baffled by the Macheads, Macaddicts and Mac(insert your clever name here), is that, by and large, we love our computers. We gladly sacrifice 8 miles of game shelving at the local Best Buy for the subtle beauty of our computers. The ease of use. The intuitive design and functionality and plug-n-play in all it's glory.

I don't know anyone personally who can say the same about Windows. Even a good friend of mine, who gives me crap every chance he gets about my Mac, said in a moment of quiet reflection, that he hates Windows. Can't stand it. And that's not the first time I've heard that from a PC user. But Mac users love their computers. So yeah, this kind of freaks me out. I have faith that Apple won't sell it's soul down the river, but hearing that XP or Vista (whenever it's released) will now boot up on a Mac does give me pause.

And go ahead dbee, I know you're dying to drop some Mac sucks comments in here.

It's a bit like someone saying how much they love a screw driver that only works with 5% of the screws out there. A computer is a tool to me. It's not a lifestyle or a club or a cult. I love women because they love me back. I don't love computers.

Nothing like that at all. People love their cars, they love their homes, they love their favorite pair of jeans, they love a certian food. Sure there are thousands of apps out there that aren't available to the 5% of us that don't use PC's, but 90% of those people that can use the other 95% of the software available, only use maybe five or six programs on a regular basis. All that extra stuff is just background noise for them. The whole 5% argument thing is redundant at this point.

I am totally stoked about this. I have some work that has to get done on a PC. (VPN client, and some PC only software) Now I can cut down on the amount of hardware I need.
