When I was a kid I used to argue with my parents about this. What is the point, I asked, of being from an affluent culture if we still have to eat the filler crap.

Why do people call carbs "fillers"? The're not. If you look at virtually every culture on the planet, you'll see that everyone matches some kind of carb with their protein source (meat, fish, beans..) to make a balanced meal. If you ate only protein all the time, you'd suffer from chronic fatigue. Even dieting bodybuilders still eat carbs. You need energy.

Rice, rice baby!

The very best thing in the whole world: cook loads of rice, put the remainder in the fridge, fry in olive oil , mushroom, onion and garlic the next day, add TWO eggs, stir til fluffy - add a little soy sauce. Next-day rice is for frying, guys.

Life just doesn't get any better than that!

see also fried nextdaynewpotatoes, over-done. Add salt, pepper and mayo.

English bread is the best. English food rarely gets a good write-up - which is a shame - but English bakery bread is unbeatable.

I voted for rice however.

You forgot about fat. Fat and protein make a fine, healthy diet. No carbs needed. In fact, you're better off without them.

Fat? Technically, that's right, but I've read in health magazines that fat is not processed into energy by the body efficiently. No athlete would ever substitute carbs with fat. I guess if you're not the athletic type, fat is okay.

However, you also have to be careful what kind of fat you're eating and also the quantities or fat is harmful. For most people, that's too bothersome to plan so a simple and healthy meal plan would be a little meat / fish / poultry. a moderate serving of carbs and lots of veges (for this reason we should call veges "filler" items because they should be the food that fill you up.

* Before you jump on my back, I will remind you that this is what I have read. I am not a dietician or doctor.

Hey guys we should have pasta on the poll too!

Who cares if carbs are bad or we don't need them? They're bloody delicious. Pasta, spuds, rice, bread - bring it all on!

Indeed. The fourth option, pasta. Spaghetti, lasagna, ravioli, linguine, manicotti, et al. Even that old student standby, mac and cheese.

I admit that carbs are necessary for a person's diet, but not in the amount that most people eat and on their own they don't taste like much.

Carbs aren't the least bit necessary.

That said, Spinoza is right. Life without carbs sucks. Sad
