Mark Sandman died on stage.
How rock and roll is that?
This is a challenge:
Name other great talents who died by means other than suicide/murder/choking on vomit/drug overdose before their time (meaning old age doesn't count a la Frank Sinatra.
Morrison and Bobby Darin are the only two I can think of. Morrison is debatable.
Just curious what you can come up with. |

You forgot to include airplane crashes in your list--Buddy Holly, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Rick whatever his last name was that was on that TV show and they found cocaine in his blood, but his family didn't believe it. |

Oh yes. What could be more rock n roll than dying in a plane crash. |

Suicide is a pretty common cause of death for musicians: Ian Curtis, Nick Drake, Richard Manuel, Michael Hutchence, something like three (!) members of Bad Finger. And of course that tw*t from Nirvana. Like, totally rock n' roll, dudes. |

He's still alive, although you might not recognize because he's had cosmetic surgery. |

Syd Barrett (Pink Floyd) - didn't die, but went crazy and completely changed. His personality, since 1967, is completely different from what it was before. He lives alone in Cambridge, England, and the royalties from only one full album with Floyd provide him with a 250,000GBP per year income.
Chuck Schuldiner - singer/guitarist/leader of Florida metal band, Death. Died of a rare form of brain cancer in 2001. Death Metal enthusiasts have mixed opinions about Chuck, because later in his life he became a Christian. He was a talented, handsome, very pleasant guy and it's sad that he's gone. |

Gene Pitney recently died in his bed at 65. An icon in his time, later eclipsed by the British Wave in the sixties. Known for his 'pop aria' style, along with Roy Orbison. RIP. |

Back in '99, I think. Onstage in Italy.
Oh, and I think Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a helicopter crash. Just thought I'd split that hair.
He wasn't technically a singer, but I'll put Bill Hicks on the list. He did some music, but was known for his stand-up comedy and he always seemed more a Hendrix-style rock star than your average comic. Died of pancreatic cancer in '94.
Excluding murder, suicide and overdoses doesn't leave us very many ways to die early. Come to that, I was just thinking about it and, sadly, the list of singers who were murdered is sure long: Marvin Gaye, Jam Master Jay (Run DMC), Tupac, Sam Cooke, Biggie, John Lennon, etc. |

John Bonham died on September 24, 1980 at Jimmy Page's home. He had consumed an uncountable number of drinks and had been taking a drug to keep him off of heroin, and when he was laid down to sleep, his face was up instead of down, which caused him to choke on his own vomit. |

I also left off Bob Marley. Toe Cancer.
I was hoping for more original and accidental deaths. Patti Smith fell off a stage and broke her neck. Rock and roll!. But she lived...
Morphine: One Sax, One 2-string bass, and a drummer. Sandman on vocals. Amazing what they did with minimalism.
Eponymous album: Cure For Pain ('Good' is also pretty damn good)
One off track: Sharks Patrol These Waters |
