John Lennon's cover of "Stand By Me" wasn't bad... The original was by Ben E. King and, according to Wikipedia, it was the fourth most performed song of the twentieth century... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stand_by_Me_%28song%29

'Billy Jean' by German band The Bates really rocks.

'The Mercy Seat' by Johnny Cash is even more chilling than Nick Cave's version IMHO.

Stiff Little Finger's version of Bob Marley's 'Johnny Was' also kicks ass.
