According to the Korean Times today, the government is considering designating a certain day "Foreigners Day" in order to draw attention to Korea's increasing multi-cultural diversity (or something like that)
Anyone know more about this? |

We've decided Foreigners are OK after all since one with some of our genes played well in a sport most of us don't know the rules to, day.
It isn't very catchy is it? |

Nice idea. I'm never averse to a bit more kind attention. |

Sneak hug attacks from my students are adorable, but not sure I like the idea of encouraging adjoshis to do the same |

I suppose its a positive step, but most of us would probably just rather try and blend in and be treated same as anyone else. I don't view other races as any different to myself, so the idea of a day to draw even more attention to me because I'm different seems a little daunting.
Hmm...can anyone imagine George Bush designating a "hispanic day" in the U.S? |

Somehow I don't think this day will celebrate 3D workers.
It's an interesting first step, but it's typical in dividing Korea into two classes ("us" versus "them.") It'd be great if people would start to see how outmoded the term "foreigner" or "ܱ" is.
How about just having more multicultural events? |

Yeah, I'd hate to throw back something at them which is essentially a positive initiative. I just have the same feeling that it will further highlight the us vs them division.
And yep, I hate the waygook word too.
Maybe they should instead call other nationalities "New koreans", and mixed race people "The future Koreans".

In Canada, we've had "Heritage Day" for at least 20 years now. It is celebrated the first weekend in August. It is a chance for all of the ethnicities that make up Canada to show off our diversity, our culture and and our ability to interact together.

I would think some sort of foreigner day would be be a great start to recognizing the diversity that is contributing to this countrys' success over the last 20 - 30 years industrially, and of course, as a U.N. effort to protect this country 50 years ago. It would be nice if they didn't call it foreigner day though. Perhaps Ethno-cultural day or something.

Seems to be a chance for everyone to celebrate not being Canadian. Quite interesting that the Scots and English don't have pavillions, even though a large proportion of Canadians are of such descent. |

I know it is not you who said this, but it's a very funny expression.

I've always found it amazing that ܱ seems to spring to mind immediately, like gender. But then I look around and figure, damm, I am a bit scarce. |

I get called this by Koreans here in Toronto all the time.
If they have "Foreigners Day" maybe they can make it on May 21st, to cancel out Gwangju's "Anti-American Day." |
