DENVER -- Several students at Shaw Heights Middle School have been disciplined for wearing shirts that depict the American flag, an act that is in direct violation of the public school's recent ban on all flags, depictions of flags, or flag colors on student clothing.
One student said he was suspended for wearing a DARE program shirt with a flag behind the logo. Another student, Katie Golgart, said she was suspended for wearing a Marine Corps shirt.
Elizabeth Haas, told reporters that she was told to turn her Marine Corps shirt inside out and when she did and then turned it back the right way, she was suspended. Haas, an 11-year-old sixth grader, said that she wears a USMC shirt every day to support her brother, who is in the Corps, and she wasn't aware of the ban until she was suspended...
Schools such as Shaw Heights in Westminster, Colo., and Skyline High School in Longmont, Colo., have enacted bans on all flags -- American and Mexican -- as a way to diffuse the confrontations students have engaged in because of the recent immigration debate. School officials say it's a safety issue.
Shaw Heights Principal Myla Shepherd implemented the flag and clothing ban last week after several incidents, including one in which about 25 students wore camouflaged clothing on one day.
In a letter sent home to parents that's dated April 7, Sheperd doesn't sound as if she's backing down from the ban.
"During the week of March 27th, students were observed exhibiting behavior that was interfering with instruction. This behavior appeared to be directly related to students' attire...
Skyline High School Principal Tom Stumpf said he enacted the flag ban after American flags were brazenly waved in the faces of Hispanic students, and in one case, a Mexican flag was thrown into the face of another student. |

In a San Diego protest, scheduled for tomorrow, the Mexican protesters have finally moved to suppress the Mexican nationalism that harms their cause and embrace the country they say they want to make their home...

Those immigrant activists aren't the only ones who like to wave around foreign flags...

However, the real targets are Hispanic swing voters - recent immigrants - who are a small part of the 7.4 million Latinos likely to turn out this year, according to the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project.
Bush's latest Spanish-language TV ads pay glossy tribute to these newcomers' roots, exhibiting the flags of countries and territories such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua before dissolving into the Stars and Stripes.

There are times when I really believe I am paranoid but when I have to partake in or witness a discussion along the lines of what the protestors are saying, I just get scared.
Them: "You must provide healthcare for us, the law says so, you must respect the law"
Them: "You must provide education for us, the law says so, you must respect the law"
Us: "Pssst dude, you aren't supposed to be in the country"
Them: "The USA is a nation of immigrants"
Them: "We want to be law abiding citizens"
Us: "Very commendable. That means you must actually obey the law then"
Them: "The USA is a nation of immigrants"
I have never seen denial and disrespect so fierce and so bold. Perhaps I see different debating tactics and I can't recognize them. Perhaps I see different ethics. Perhaps I just see aggressive, sleazy and frightening behavior.
How does this work? Disobey laws you don't like and lobby sincerely they are changed while still refusing to submit but still insisting on your goodness? The union is dissolving. |
