Anyone been to Thailand recently and seen these foreigners vounteering with the Thai Police (Tourist Police?)?
I find it interesting for a couple of reasons and I'm not so sure what to think of it.
People have said that they carry handcuffs ( I think you can see them in the photo), pepper spray and walkie talkies and that they have uniforms.
Looks kind of dangerous for everyone invovled, IMO.

Is there a helmet law in Thailand?
If so I'd be tempted to tackle the guy and make a citizen's arrest!
(er, tourist's arrest)
I'd volunteer to do it. If any joe shmoe can. |

Nobody pays any attention to them. It's another "great idea" that will fade away into the sunset soon. |

Nobody may pay attention to them, however don't be so sure it will go away soon. They are kind of like teacher's pet, they allow the police to look like they're doing their job by making arrests periodically. My neighbour in Patong primarily uses her restaurant as a place to sell coke and by the time I left to come back here there was an "undercover" foreign police guy there trying to get info.
Another benefit; I knew an older Scandi guy in Samui who kept a restaurant/guest house who was one, and one night when we had a problem that required police assistance and he was able to get them over very quickly. That's no small feat in Thailand. |
