| The sad fact is that we are not properly situated in this world. There is not much hope for real enjoyment or happiness here - just a little sensual pleasure and a lot of mental concoction...The reservoir of all pleasure is in the spiritual world, and we just get a few ("trickle-down effect") drops of happiness. Any intelligent person can see that there's a hell of a lot more suffering here than happiness (despite fancy/sexy gadgets...) As humans, we're not even as well equipped to enjoy sex life as most animals are (except for a few porn stars and maybe Pamela Anderson...) |
Nah. |

"Nah?" Well, I presume that you're not rejecting Pamela Anderson ... Ergo, you're probably thinking that the happiness-suffering ratio isn't so bad here... That's just the awesome power of the illusory energy.
That's what makes a pig think he's enjoying a great-tasting meal when he's eating stool... That's what makes a roach think his mate is very sexy...
Humans may have some fine arts, music, sports, literature and other so-called entertainment, but material pleasures pretty much boil down to various forms of gross and subtle sex life. While we try for that our own bodies and minds always give us some sort of trouble, especially as we grow older.... Other people (like our bosses) are always disturbing us one way or another... Natural disasters are frequently striking somewhere on this planet inflicting huge amounts of suffering and loss to millions. The basic miseries of old age, disease and death are insurmountable (despite so-many bogus claims to the contrary by "scientific" bluffers and cheats...) The mortality rate is still 100%, and all hopes and dreams of earthly happiness and everlasting (material) love are ultimately dashed -like sand castles swept by ocean waves...
The Vedas state that compared to the ocean of transcendental pleasure in the spiritual world what passes for happiness here is just a drop of water in a desert. Based on my own experience (and faith in great self-realized souls ... ) I'm inclined to agree...

Speak for yourself, chum. I can assure you that my sex life is neither gross nor subtle (whatever that means). Many will attest to this, but I'm not inclined to name names. |

No, thank Christ. Why would anyone want to have sex with an eight-armed woman? If it was appendages I was interested in, I'd *beep* an octopus. |

| RTeacher, something I have been wondering for awhile. Hinduism has a caste system. How do converts figure out where in this caste system they belong? (If this is wrong, sorry, my hinduism knowledge is lacking). |

It's not a "she" ...
SADBHUJA-MURTI
This transcendental form was manifested before Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya by Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to reveal His identity as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Although Godhead is one, He has innumerable forms. As a jewel may at different times appear to be of various colors, so the Lord appears at different times with different features and performs His varieties of pastimes. For example, in a previous age the Lord appeared as Lord Ramachandra. At that time His complexion was greenish, and He performed pastimes as a perfect king and warrior, Similarly, Krishna Himself appeared 5,000 years ago in His original form, with bluish complexion, and enlivened His devotees by playing His flute. By exhibiting the form of sadbhuja-murti, Lord Chaitanya revealed that He was the same Supreme Lord who had previously appeared as Lord Ramachandra and Lord Krishna.

Not immoral, IMO, so much as full of a lot of hubris.
If we don't know everything, how can we conclusively know that god doesn't exist?
To me, that's just as arrogant as saying "I know that my religion, my god, is the only true one, and everyone else is a dupe or a sinner." |
It's a lot less hubristic than believing there is a god, seeing as the evidence for a god is absolutely nada. |

That landbridge in the satellite photos back on thread page one is totally cool. Is there a date, in the myths, or estimate when it would have been made. And its condition now? It's evident from the satellite photos, and how far underwater nowadays? What a massive construction project for an ancient culture (must have been powerful). Amazing what they're finding out these days with satellite photos and other archaelogical technological advances.
Re; meditation/spiritual regimin/practice and that being where the bliss is I agree. I left off meditating regularly and recently got back into it in the last few days and the energy rushes back in. Feels good. |

In response to "laogaiguk" I'll give some explanation of the caste system, and I'll try to keep a long story short (...fat chance of that happening, eh?) In Bhagavad-gita, Krishna (who you should at least theoretically accept as God to progress in spiritual science...) states that he created four basic social divisions (along with four spiritual ashrams) that correspond with the interacting material modes of nature: goodness, passion and ignorance.
chatur-varnyam maya srishtam
guna-karma vibhagashah
tasya kartaram api mam
viddhy akartaram avyayam
"According to the three modes of material nature and the work associated with them, the four divisions of human society are created by Me. And although I am the creator of this system, you should know that I am yet the non-doer, being unchangeable." (Bg. 4.13)
The social body in its division of labor also resembles the human body with respect to different functions of the head, arms, belly and legs. The intellectual or brahminical class, corresponds to the head of society and their work is conducted primarily in the mode of goodness. The martial/administrative class (ksatriyas) work mainly in the mode of passion and they are the "arms" of society. The mercantile/farmer class (vaishyas) work mainly in the mixed modes of passion and ignorance and are the "belly" of society. The "legs" of the social order are the sudras (general laborers and craftsmen...)
"These different classes of men, recognized by their respective tendencies for work, are always present, and the system of social organization based on these divisions is called varnashrama. Varna indicates the four social divisions we have already listed, and ashrama indicates progressive spiritual stages. The ashrama are (1) student life, (2) married life, (3) retired life, and (4) renounced life, and they are meant to train each man to perform his duties for the satisfaction of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna."

Long ago this system became corrupted in India, beginning with the degradation of the brahmana class, and it became known as the infamous caste system. I'll quote again from the article written by an old acquaintance/godbrother of mine:
"The actual varnashrama system cannot be accused of discrimination or of limiting the individual's opportunity to follow his inclinations and aspirations. The caste system of India, although using the terminology of varnashrama (brahmana, kshatriya, vaishya, shudra), is not actually varnashrama, because it is based on heredity. The Indian caste system has deteriorated and failed for just this reason. Someone born into a family of brahmanas, the priestly or intellectual class, would claim to be a brahmana automatically, whether or not he had the qualifications, and even if his activities were most degenerate. This is not at all sensible, nor is it supported by the Gita. For example, the son of a high-court judge may receive the opportunity, by inspiration and instruction, to become a high-court judge himself. But he still requires training and education before he seeks an appointment to that post. He cannot claim to be qualified for such a position merely on the strength of his high parentage. Similarly, the son of a doctor may naturally desire to practice medicine and may take advantage of his father's experience. But he, too, requires long years of training in medical school. So the argument that birth qualifies one for a certain post in society contradicts common sense and is not supported by the instructions of the Bhagavad-gita. Anyone is free to take any position in society, provided he develops the qualifications. Varnashrama cannot be accused of rigidity or of restricting social mobility. The actual varnashrama system trains and educates the individual in the duties and occupation for which he is already inclined. Lord Krishna gives directions for that training in the Bhagavad-gita and other Vedic literatures. Any other system of training, whether caste, communist, or democratic, necessarily misguides society and spoils the mission of human life..."http://www.krishna.com/printarticles/Anatomy_Social_Body.html |
