Thanks to this thread, I may have the chance to work in Icheon. Has anybody got any comments on that? My Korean friends just told me all about Incheon, then when I eventually sorted out the confusion they just said 'Oh Icheon, good city' but it was obvious none of them had ever been there!

Is it a reasonably pleasant place, with good transport links? The job sounds quite good and that's my main priority.

I am also getting some job offers in Seoul which I may consider if the Icheon job falls through. Are there any areas of Seoul that are to be avoided at all costs?

From what I hear it is a very industrial city with not much going for it. Although, it does have a little China Town and there are some nice islands to visit nearby. However, it will take you about an hour or so by subway to get to central Seoul.

Thanks ilovebdt

However, I think you too have just told me about Incheon, whereas I asked about ICHEON which is south-east of Seoul and therefore has not islands. As far as I know it also has no subway connection to Seoul.

Noone I know has ever been there!

We were just there a few weeks ago. Seems like a nice place, good size, not too polluted, good restaurants and nice shopping district. Not too big, not too small.

I know it's well after you've posted this, but Icheon can be nice depending on where you're living. I'd shy away a bit from living in the Shindun district because it's pretty much in the middle of nowhere. If you're going to actually be in town, everything is pretty convenient and it's a decent place to live.

Even if you are in the country in the middle of nowhere, there are still buses. They don't really run that often though and you may have to walk quite a ways to get to a bus stop. The closest bus stop to the school I taught at was half an hour away. Well, there was actually one right in front of the school, but that bus only ran a few times a day and at very inconvenient times.

If you have any more questions about Icheon, let me know. I know a few other foreigners that are still there.

DO NOT accept a job from overseas.

"But this isn't what the school looked like in the photo you sent me!"

"My apartment is where?!? You didn't say that to me over the phone."

"How much am I getting paid? But you said it was ... in your email"

etc etc ad naseum.

You need to see your director of the hagwon, you need to see your apartment/contract.

Don't do it!

I am also from the UK looking for work. So far englishwork.com have found a job for me and I have been contacted by a teacher from the school. The recruiters have since sent me a contract which I said I would look over and get back to them on. Would you still advise NOT to organise a job before I go? Personally, I would feel a lot more secure doing this, in which case, do you have any tips on getting some reasonably solid assurances from the recruiter and school?

Some people had a bad experience and have decided that no people are to be trusted. I've found two jobs from overseas and have has no problems. Just make sure you are thorough with your research and talk to a few of the current teachers. Not fool proof, but nothing is.
