hey guys,
I'm hopefully coming to SK in a couple months but before I go, I'm probably going to sell off my current computer to pay off a few debts. I was hoping to build a fairly decent gaming computer in SK (amd64, 6800, etc), but are higher end computer parts available for a decent price in SK?
Thanks!

Hi,

You might want to check out this site:

http://pc.danawa.com/

If you can muddle through a bit of Korean, you can check the competitive prices here in South Korea.

In general, though, if you shop in the right places (i.e. the internet or Yongsan <sic> in Seoul) you can get good deals on computer components relative to N.America or Europe.

hmmm, ok... so you would recommend to keep my ghetto laptop and bring it with me until I can get myself over to Seoul to get some good parts?

well a laptop is a different story. I think its much cheaper to get one in North America. Desktops, on the other hand, can be cheaper here.

well, i already have a laptop here, it's just really crappy. So, I guess I'll bring that and have it tide me over until i can save up enough $$ to buy me a desktop that I can build.
so availability is there in Korea though right? Like, I would be able to find fairly decently priced, higher end computer parts in Korea without too much of a problem?

Shocked Shocked

hmm....I built a high-end gaming machine myself. I would recommend (for the video card only) going though Tigerdirect.com. Purchase the video card through them and have them send it to someone in The States. Have that person throw it into a box with other "care package stuff". This way you avoid the import tax.

I purchased a geforce 6800GT with 512ram (pci express 16) from them for $300.

I was stupid; could have bought a 7800GT with 256ram for $339 from them. Man....they were giving away a free motherboard with it too! Shocked Shocked Check it out. Everything else, buy from Korea (harddrive, case, power supply, etc.). That stuff is farily cheap here. It's the video card that you want to import due to price. The same card I bought for $300 went on some sites here in Korea for over $500 and in 2 different places, almost $1,000! Shocked Shocked I am not kidding either. Don't believe me, check danawa.com, compu..something.com, yongsanmall.com, etc.

Definitely. The video card (one of the most important pieces of a PC IMO), in respect to the cost/quality ratio will be much MUCH less in The States or Canada.

Not weird.

It's Korea's huge import tax and price controls.

Gotta have that room salon and Thailand money for the boys in the office!
