Nothing Else Matters, covered by Bif Naked.
I think she stays really close to the original which, in my opinion, is a good thing. |

Ah. I knew something was off. I was also looking for a song titled "The Message", since that is actually what the original ("99 Balloons') is named.
Thanks for taking the time. If this was the other board I'd wickedly enhance your rep and donate a few bucks.
Cheers. |

Which one?
There are many levels.

I noticed there weren't too many from the ladies, so...
Linda Ronstadt:
I'll Be Your Baby Todnight (Dylan)
Will You Love Me Tomorrow? (The Shirelles/Carole King)
I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You (Hank Williams)
When Will I Be Loved (Everly Brothers)
Janis Joplin:
Ball and Chain (Big Mama Thornton)
Summertime (George Gershwin)
Me and Bobby McGee (Kris Kristoferson)
Joan Baez:
Tears of Rage (Bob Dylan)
One Too Many Mornings (Dylan)
Restless Farewell (Dylan)
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (The Band)
Bette Midler:
I Shall Be Released (Dylan)
Hello In There (John Prine)
When A Man Loves A Woman (Percy Sledge)
Fever (Peggy Lee)
Aretha Franklin:

"Love Hurts" by Gram Parsons (and Emmy Lou Harris), originally done by the Everly Bros. (also a great version).
Unfortunately, most people know the horrible cover of the song done by a really lame Christian metal band called Nazareth. |
That's a fantastic version of that song but the earliest version I know is by Roy Orbison. I also really like David Crosby's and Lucinda William's cover of Return of hte Grevious Angel.
But my most favorite cover that I've discovered recently is Bob Dylan's "Percy's Song" done by Fairport Convention. |

Jeff Buckley does excellent covers of Dylan's "Farewell Angelina" and Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah".
Ben Harper does a killer version of Stawberry Fields.
Steve Earle does excellent covers of Nirvana's "Breed" and Bruce Springsteen's "State trooper".
In a bizarre twist, Townes Van Zandt does a great cover of The Stones' "dead flowers" on the Bib Lebowski soundtrack.
Tool does a good job on the Kyuss classic "Demon Cleaner". |
