What Manner of Speaking said: Yeah, I've noticed that syndrome w/ the Western guy and Korean GF. A few months ago I was in Seoul for the weekend and walked into a convenience store. The Korean girlfriend of this Westerner actually gave me a slight smile. Hell, I gave her a slight smile back. Man, the eye daggers that this guy threw at me! Did he think I was going to steal his gal? I was about 15 yrs. his senior and I haven't had too many requests from GQ to be on their cover! |

Oh yeah, these fellers I wanted to write down in the freak section, but I couldn't quite articulate it. WTF!!! The competition between eligable men here is BIZARRE. I don't think they necessarily get more dates than anyone else, they just want you to think they do. Like you say MOS, we are mostly all pretty happy with our sex lives here aren't we? I get irritated by these young chumps who act like they invented sex just because finally they are getting some!
So, like I said, I stick my neck out every time and pretty much say hi to everyone but I spot these guys a mile off because I can see them mimicking the good life, puffing their chests out, putting on a 'I'm cool and getting some' smirk on their faces as soon as they see my six foot, confident frame. When I give a really friendly smile and say hi, they don't have time to drop their playboy facade and be nice back; it's so funny, I usually get a confused glare. It's pathetic and embarrassing at times, but I got to make these guys realize how silly they are. |

Mosley,
Pretty bad, huh? Shows you what these guys think of their girlfriends...as property. Maybe she's studying English, maybe she's just being polite to a foreigner, maybe she's just comfortable around foreigners. You should have walked over and said, "Good morning", just for the fun of it! |

Butterfly,
That's a good way to put it. Every time I see one of these guys, that song
'I'm too sexy for my car' runs through my head. It's like having somebody smirk at you because they have a better microwave oven than you do. Who cares. |

Or they find out that the girl they're with has a boyfriend anyway, and is only using them. |

Best relationship I had out here was exactly like that. True, I was used. Phoning me up, to come meet her at the bar so we could go home together. Popping by in the middle of the week just for sex.
Never felt so violated in my life!
And when she was crying, and having problems that needed to be talked out and DEALT WITH... who did she go running to??? Her boyfriend.
Never once did I have to spend hours going shopping with her, or give a patient ear to her problems. We never even shared the joy off sitting down and planning our lives together, for shame.
Thats the boyfriends job.
I was nothing but a cheap good time.
How used I felt.
I really need to phone that girl again!!!!!

This certainly only happens in Korea. It's kinda like Han and Jung; us foreigners who haven't assimilated just can't understand. |

I'm not sure if you're being gently sarcastic. If you are, OK, I see your point. I was only trying to point out that this "syndrome"(if I may use the term) seems to be very pronounced here. By way of comparison, I lived for some years in Japan and with exceptions, of course, MOST people, Japanese & foreign, seem(ed) far less uptight about personal relationships, the job you have(or don't have), etc., etc. "You have a Japanese GF?Great! You don't have one? Well, OK." And so on. There IS a bit of the same neurosis there that you find here, but I would argue w/confidence that it's far less prominent in Japan than in the peculiar peninsula. That's all.... |

Well, Mosley... since ALL Korean girls are so perfect and sexy and fit and feminine and so superior to all of those fat, back-pack wearing, western women, wouldnt you be suspicious of every foreign guy who comes around looking at your little K-Doll?
Cuz you know they are. |

Beckerson:"Cuz you know they are." I sure as hell hope you're wrong. If you're right, then in a country with hundreds of thousands of single gals, then there ARE neurotic, "freaky" waygook males by the planeload on this peninsula. I'm taking your last post literally, of course.... Cheers.... |

Hi! I welcome all of you to join a discussion website started for the soul purpose of increasing understanding between Westerners & Koreans in Korea (specifically in Seoul).
I am a Canadian ESL teacher here in Seoul, and I opened the site in order to gain broader perspectives - opinions not only from other ESL teachers like yourselves, but feedback from Koreans who may be able to give us more insight - especially within a non-threatening environment like an anonymous chat forum.

Come, join, read, post, argue, challenge, etc! Invite your friends!

This is page 6 (I think) so does anyone still care?
He is my dime. If anyone of you worked in your home country before comming here then you can't criticize. Answer these questions:
1. How many of you are of have worked your field of study?
2. How many of you have worked with others who have never worked in their field of study?
3. How many of you honestly think that when you live in another country that you would not find people from your home country that you despise?
I feel you and I have been guilty of some of the things mentioned here. I took a pay cut to come here and I'd like to say it was for the passion of teaching a kid English but I can't. I have never met anyone here who can say that. I'm sure that they are here. I can say, however, that I would not make a different decision if I had it to do over.
If you happen to see me walking and I don't say "hi" don't sweat it. I didn't do it at home. I don't say much to the random Korean so I'm not going out of my way to say anything to a guy just because he is from another country. Nope! I'm a marketing major who left his systems analyst gig to teach English but I love it. Sue me. I don't post enough to do it drunk...(If someone does that anywhere I think it's a bit strange). I can't recall the rest but I hope you get rid of us bad esl teachers to make way for the professionaly trained, non-drinking, "hello fellow foreigner where are you from" salutations sending teachers. Good luck. In the mean time can anyone tell me where I can buy some Rasin Bran? |
