When I was on the way back to Korea last weekend, I couldn't resist picking up a bottle of Jack in the duty free store, even though I'm not a big whiskey fan. The three times I've sampled it since then, I've found it to be incredibly potent.

I'm comparing this to my experiences with whiskey I'd bought in Korea over the last year I was living here. There have been a few instances where I've literally finished an entire bottle of whiskey and barely had a buzz. I'm talking about the brands they sell in every store - Chivas Regal, Imperial, etc. These probably aren't Korean brands, but I never noticed them before coming to Korea because in the US I never really drank liquor. Also, the flavor of them was incredibly weak, and much sweeter.

Is Jack Daniels some sort of magical nectar of the whiskey gods? Have I been missing out all these years by not drinking it?

When I read international magazines, such as the Economist, I see advertisements for Chivas Regal. Also, the price for Chivas Regal is similar to Jack. But the disparity in quality is unbelieeeeeevable.

Jack has a bit of what I would call a "rougher" taste, as it's Bourbon. Chivas Regal is Scotch- overall much smoother tasting. Jack right now is at about the same % alcohol by volume as Chivas, so it shouldn't make a difference which one will get you buzzed first Razz

I like the Imperial and Windsor. I think they are Korean whiskeys.

I don't believe there is such a thing as a "Korean" whiskey (or whisky, for that matter) they are all bought from foreign distilleries (Scotland, Ireland, USA, Canada) and re-branded for the local market, in exactly the same way that Santori is not a "Japanese" whiskey.
Or so I have been told.
Is a 'Korean' branded whiskey of lower quality than than, say, a Glenfiddich?
Or a Johnny Walker Blue?

Could there really be any doubt?

My info is about 6 years old- can anyone confirm that there are now actual Korean (as in, located in Korea) distilleries?

Jack isn't bourbon...it's made in Tennesee. Whisky has to be made in a certain part of Kentucky to qualify as bourbon...kinda like how sparkling wine isn't champagne unless it's from a certain region in France.

Don't believe me?

Yeah, it's weird, isn't it? I drink a stiff Jack & Coke and I'm set. I drink an entire bottle of Chivas Regal on the rocks and all I have is a sticky throat and bad breath.

Scotch is where it's at. Get you a good single malt or even blended kinds are really good as well such as Johnny Walker, Chavez Regal, J&B, or Dewars. Bourbon is good but scotch is better in my opinion. Though I hear that many people dont care for scotch. I'm still trying to figure that one out.

Scotch, scotch, scotch, scotch, scotch!!!

That stuff is gooooood. Johny's nice but Glenfidditch is better, especially the 15 year old. Even better is some of the other single malt like Oban or Skye. Mmmm.

Amen. Jack Daniel's is ok but pretty sweet, like rum. There's no comparison to real Scotch - and that most definitely does not include Imperial or Windsor or any of those godforsaken brands popular in Korea. Good Scotch doesn't get you hammered if you drink it slowly but it will give you a nice buzz all night.
