|
|
For years I have wondered about it and never been able to figure it out -- what is that mirror for on the back of all SUVs and mini-vans?
I once thought it was aimed down at the rear bumper so that the driver could see while parallel parking, but if you look at the angle of the mirror, it's not tipped downwards -- it's aimed to provide viewing into the back seat, or so it appears.
What purpose does it serve?
Really hoping that the answer isn't something so incredibly obvious that I look stupid, but I've never seen these mirrors on the rear windows of large vehicles in ANY other country! |

It is a collision detection system. It warns you when you are about to back into something. Very helpful on the cramped streets we have here. |

So if you hit something, the mirror gets it... not the bumper? |

I wonder the same thing. I thought maybe they were aimed directly behind the car so you can see; bikes, kids, ajummas, etc..., before you back over them.
My Wife insists they are aimed into the backseat as some sort of (is anyone hiding in the backseat?!) security device. I don't buy it.
FYI she's not Korean, so don't pay any extra attention to her theory on those grounds.

It *is* aimed down to assist in parking.
The reason it looks like it doesn't is that it's a convex mirror. |
