Going to Egypt this summer on my way around the world (over two months) and I have heard that it is best to get the visa before you go there. Anyone know where the Embassy is in Seoul and how to get there. Also any other information on great things to do and see around Cairo would be awesome. Of course Giza and the pyramids and museums and things but I also want to do a desert camping trip. Going to be there for 5 days before flying off to Amsterdam for a month in Europe.

Just get your visa at the airport when you arrive. It costs 15 USD. I didn't have to wait in line to get it either, just went to the booth adjacent passport control and bought it. Very simple.

Cairo.. Hmmm.. What's your cup of tea? What's your budget? It's a huge place with a bit of everything.

5 days in Cairo? or 5 days in Egypt total? If the latter, just stick to Cairo and maybe a day trip to Alexandria or some other nearby location.

Pass on the camping trip.
Take a train to Luxor/Thebes and check out the Valley of the Kings, Hetsheput and Ahkenaton's temples [sp], Karnak, etc.
You could take an overnight train get a full day in and take an overnight train back.
If you've got a healthy budget take a flight up to Aswan for a day and check out Abu Simbel.
There are lots of places in the world to go camping (even desert camping) but there is only one valley of the Kings, and one Abu Simbel, one Egypt.
Ditto on sleeping- it's over-rated, and you can do it in Amsterdam. Laughing
Don't leave regretting not having gone to these places.

Count your money carefully and stay away from Stella beer, and/or bring imodium.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I only have 5 days in Egypt and planning on spending most of it in Cairo.
Not sure about any little side trips. My budget isn't terribly limited as I am still getting paid while on vacation but I do also have a whole month in Europe after this and that won't be terribly cheap from the prices I have seen. How far is the valley of the Kings from Cairo?
Hadn't thought about the camping in that way before. A friend of mine has done it and he had a great time and that is why it was in my head as a cool thing to do. Hope other people can maybe post some ideas too.

I've suggested this before but anyone wanting to visit the pyramids of Giza should approach from the west, and the best time is dawn. It is a long way round - and I do mean long as you have to go a way south, then west, north and finally east - but really worth the time, effort and money.

Luxor is a 10 or 12 hour train ride from Cairo if memory serves. If you take the evening train, you get there by 8 am. Bulsajo's advice is good: take the night train, do the tour of the valley of the kings, come back that evening. It would be super tiring, but it would maximize your time.

Abu Simbel was my favorite site in Egypt. I personally thought the valley of the kings was ok, but not mind-blowing. Karnak was a cool temple though.
