I'm buying a laptop (middle-range quality: Presario with Turion processor) here in the U.S. and I'm contemplating buying an extended warranty (the manufacturer's is a typical one-year deal). I'm not sure which to buy, if any, partly because I'll be in Korea for at least a year, maybe longer, and I'm wondering how feasible and costly it would be to have it shipped back home for repairs (store warranty states I would have to pay for shipping of unit one way while it would pay other way). The salesperson said that the battery replacement alone might make it worthwhile, since, according to him, many people replace their batteries every year and a half or so.
Which of these would you buy, if any? The options: 1) basic coverage, including product repair and replacement for any faulty parts, battery replacement, and surge protection----four years, $300; two years, just over $150. 2) "accidental damage" coverage, including everything covered in basic plan plus owner negligence AND damage caused by third parties, weather elements, etc. This warranty covers virtually every possible scenario------four years, $400; two years, just over $200. |

A laptop is the only thing I ever buy the extended warranty on. Most of the time it is crap (they wouldn't be offering it if it didn't make them money) but so many things can go wrong with a laptop as so much is integrated. It can be expensive or even impossible to repair.
*** IMPORTANT ***
Also, extended warranties from stores are great too. My laptop when all screwy (I still don't know what happened, but wouldn't boot). I have a computer science degree and even I didn't know what was wrong. Anyways, brought it in and the store fought with the maker over who was to pay and fix it. Point of the story, went over the 60 days maximum for fixing it and they had to replace it for me. Now, it was two years old, so obviously there were no laptops with the same specs. Basically upgraded my laptop (though I shelled out an extra $100 for a DVD burner and some extras) for free |

HP/Compaq has an international warranty in place. This means that you will be able to take it into any service center (A/S Center - as they are called here), and get it fixed without any problems at all. Just make sure that you bring your receipts with you. |
