Hi Guys......I just started working for a school and nothing is what I thought it would be......the hours are much longer than what was promised- unpaid prep and grading and other required meetings. They also have not given me a contract to sign yet........although I do have a visa that was issued in my home country. Have not received my airfare back yet either.........the school is financially stable and all the other teachers seem to be quite happy. I just dont understand why this is happening to me!
I got this job through a recruiter back home. Should I take this up with them? I doubt there is anything they can do anyways and I dont want to stir up too much trouble since I have not been paid or reimbursed yet.........
So, I am thinking of bailing- how do I so this? How do others go from ome job to another? Do you just wait out your contracts? Do you begin looking for another job first then ask for a LOR? |

I dont know if this makes any difference- but I do not have an ARC yet, nor have I seen a contract- but I do have the E2 in my passport.
I would really appreciate any assistance. |

(Numbers are mine)
1. Unclear. Are you TEACHING more hours than you expected?
2. Prep and grading are part of teaching. You can't expect to be paid wages in a salaried position. Are you counting the time it takes to prep and do grades as part of teaching time, or just as part of work time?
If you are being forced to teach more hours than you expected, maybe you have grounds for a complaint. If you are just complaining that you didin't expect that you would have to prepare for class and grade some papers, then you have no grounds for complaint. You were just naive.
3. No contract? But you have a visa? This is not possible. There was a signed contract before you were issued a visa. Do you have an Alien Registration Card?
4. The date for reimbursement for airfare should be in the contract. You really need to figure out the contract puzzle. There HAS to be one. If you were promised immediate reimbursement, then you have a legitimate complaint. If you are not supposed to receive that money until the 6 month or 1 year point, then you don't have a complaint.
You sound like you are having a really bad time. May I suggest, since all the other teachers are happy, that you choose one of them and ask him/her to sit down with you and discuss what is happening? Do this before you think about bailing. |

| Something is seriously afowl here if you have a visa but have not signed a contract. What you need to do to get another job is get your visa cancelled. That may not be easy. The fact that you do not yet have an ARC makes no difference. If you never signed a contract you may be able to get your visa cancelled on those grounds. If not, you will need a letter of release. Start researching that - there are scores of threads about it here. |

As with all the other posters, the question needs to be asked. How did you get an E2 without signing a returning a contract to your school? It's impossible to get a Visa issunce number without the school providing them with a contract, degree and transcripts. If you are only on a tourist visa then Grotto is very correct in his presumption of you being "a dumbass". Get it sorted or you may end up in a heap of trouble. |

I do not know how I got my E2 withoit me seeing or signing a contract. I sent my degree/transcripts to my school while I was still in Canada and I received my visa reseervation # by email- then I took the # to the consulate and the visa was issued the next day. I flew over begn working and a contract was presented to me after working for a week and a half. There are a couple of things in there that I am trying to get changed so I have not signed it yet. I know that I cannot obtain an ARC until I sign it.
So, does my employer own me or not? Do I still need a LOR to obtain employment elsewhere? Can I cancel the visa myself? I really am seriously considering leaving the position becasue its not going as smoothly as I thought it would be and the owner/manager dont seem to care very much for the staff.
Please refrain from calling me names. It does not help me or anyone else. I am seeking help here- not looking for fights or nitpicking judgments. |

Normally I do not support illegal teachers, but in this case it seems that the hakwon owner MAY have FORGED the teacher's name onto the contract, as I don't see how else the teacher could have got a visa. If that is the case, the teacher is not to blame.
As for the OP. You will have to prove that you did not sign a contract. Otherwise you will need a LOR. |
