Here we have an American with Korean and African ethnicity. Up until a month ago a virtual unknown in Korea. Wins the MVP at the Superbowl and is suddenly the new flavour of the month in Korea. The question I would like to pose is, has he been a positve or negative influence on exposing the difficulty that mixed raced kids face in Korea and will it impact on the rampant homegeny displayed by Koreans? As an Aussie just curious about this phenomenon here. You have the South Korean skaters win the World Shortcourse championships, gold at the Turin olympics and they receive virtually nil recognition at home. Is it just me that thinks that's strange?

OK. His name is Hines Ward. Not Ward Hines. Obviously, your knowledge of him is very little. |

Thank you for correcting my mistake regarding his name. You are very correct in your assumption that I know very little about him. The point was more on will he impact on Korean ideology regarding racial purism. |

A mistake I made as well. It is likely that some of the media outlets have spelled his name in reverse, Korean-style, with the last name first. The OP might have unconsciously remembered seeing this.

Korea has a caste system not a class system. They say class system but if you can't move from one class to the next then it is a caste system. They respect only people who are higher than themselves. Hines is the first Black-Korean mixed child to ever become a success (in their eyes). He is richer and more successful than any of them and they know it, so they respect him. Seems very Korean to me. |

Up until winning the MVP he was a virtual unknown in Korea. Yes the caste system is alive and well in Korea, but he is about as Korean as I am, bar the one distinction of having a Korean parent. |
