That's getting kind of old, isn't it?

number seven really has nothing to do with the user's name.

Nor was I attempting to contribute, I was making an observation.

Nor, for that matter, have I seen a rash of sockquisitions lately...but I will drop any further suggestions along those lines as you feel they have no contributive value.

But that does beg the question: When you wrote this...

Jongno Guru, congratulations on your top five! However, for some unknown reason you omitted number six.

6. Posters who have use names that are most likely quite opposite to their real life persona. So, in this particular case, the word guru or 'a recognized expert in a field', roughly translates into 'a wanna be, or someone who never quite got there'.

Hence, they employ names that project the notion of importance or intelligence to an anonymous group of readers who have no chance to check on the 'credentials of the person using such a name'. So, at the end of the day, you have no leg to stand on.

But I guess the internet is also at fault to giving rise to these self-appointed experts. Hence, you can take consolation in that the blame is not all yours...

...what exactly were you "contributing"?

Wrong side of the bed indeed.

In all fairness, my handle is a state of mind, not a name! Furthermore, it's not even a word- I made it up from another word which is easy to guess (I would hope!).

Anyway, I sure couldn't be bothered changing it, as I am off to something else, as in, living up to my handle.

I would oblige, but the last time I changed something in my profile it took three weeks to get a response so I just flipped from the then idealjetsam to the now flotsam.

Now I'm afraid to even open my profile page...

Yeah. Never, NEVER change your email address. The Mods will just tell you to just re-register, rather than re-activating your account.

Damn, I think I'm breaking the rules in several categories. I've used this tag before on other sites and it's done nothing but endear me to people. Here it's a weight around my neck. Sad I didn't really notice the level of animosity towards Canadians at times on this board before I joined..STEEEERIKE 1. However I'm a Cape Bretoner first and a Canadian second. Cool

and it's too long according to some 1....2...3...a hefty 17 letters....STEEERIKE 2.

finally....not capitalized......big deal right?.....STEEERIKE 3.

I'm out.

Yes, you're a three-time offender, a regular poster boy for hypothetical poster-name violations.

But you're not out. The capitalisation rule is probably the most wishful of all the suggestions, so we'll that you slide on that one. The name at 17 letters really is excessive, but at least it is coherent rather than jibberish, and contains no bizarro-world spellings. In any case, the issue of length would be resolved by addressing the key violation, the "Canadian" tag. That's just got to go. I like the "capebreton" portion, though.

The impression one can get is that many Canadians who join Dave's and come to Korea (or come to Korea and then join Dave's) don't realise just how many there are of you here already. I'm sure most had heard prior to coming that there were quite a few, but I wonder if they fully appreciated the extent to which this place is or can sometimes appear positively inundated.

So they might register thinking this is going to be some... EFLer United Nations in miniature, and they want to make sure that sparsely-populated Canada is adequately represented. Perhaps they saw some poster with "kiwi" in their name and thought that's the way to go. So anyway, being proud little Canuckleheads, they add the "lookit me! I'm different! I'm special! Wink" nationality identifier to their online handles.

Then they take their first good look around and realise they're the furthest thing from "special" here, this place is about 100 times more "Canadian-looking" than I assume Vancouver or Toronto to be, and one can't swing a dead moose without knocking a few teeth out of a Canadian teacher... and probably one with "CND" or "canuck" or such tattoed on their Dave's moniker.

Orrrrrrrr, perhaps it's symptomatic of some deep national identity crisis/complex vis-a-vis the US, something that wouldn't be wholly unfamiliar to Koreans whose unofficial national motto is We're Not Japan! or We Hate Japan! *yawn*

I've almost come to assume that every new poster or poster I'm not familiar with is Canadian until proven otherwise. Saves time and I'm usually right.

I'd say that most of my favourite posters on Dave's are Canadian. But that says less about their actual likeability or individual "Cool-ness" than about their absolute numbers. And I think even if I were a Canadian, I'd find the preponderance of 'canuck-this' / 'canuck-that' poster names on Dave's just a wee bit tedious.

No, that could not, could NOT, possibly be it.

The rest of the rules look golden. But then, you knew that.

Esteemed Sir,

I also was replying to reflections, I was just adding on to your comment--utilizing it in the "neither does number 7 have to with the user's name...nor was I really attempting to contribute..." sense. I was after that sniping-with-a-shotgun bastard myself.

My sincerest apologies for the confusion. And my even more sincere wishes for a serialized Dave's Fantasy...uh...series...at your very earliest convenience.

Most sincerely and respectfully and always, truly, yours,

flotsam.

*Edit*--In response to the following post. Yeah, things seem to be a little tense on here these days, so, to be clear--the above is playful, but not sarcastic in nature. Really was responding to reflections and really do want to see the Fantasy Bar asap. Ta.

This is off-topic (but since this IS a thread in the "off-topic" forum, I am allowed?).

Man Alive! Fights all over some of the most populated/popular threads! Not too bad in name calling though, but some misunderstandings could obviously have been avoided, if people thought a little.

What the heck were we talking about again???
