I'm looking into studying Korean at a University in Korea (I'm leaning towards Sogang), but in case I am not able to do so, then studying Korean at a University in the US would be the alternative.

I found out that Berkeley offers summer intensive language classes, one for Elementary Korean, and one for Intermediate Korean. Each course carries 10 credits, and meets for 10 weeks. Anyone took these classes, or anything similar? (I believe UCLA also offers a summer intensive program, for example.) If so, were they effective for you?

Like I said, I'd rather study in Korea, but the biggest problem with all of the university programs is that it conflicts with my work schedule. I'm a teacher, and these programs either begin before the end of my school year, or end after my school year begins, or both. Two things about Berkeley that work in my favor are that (1) it doesn't conflict with my school year, and (2) my parents live less than 30 minutes away.

So if anyone has any comments about the summer intensive language program at Berkeley, or something similar in the U.S., I'd appreciate your responses. Thanks.

There is also a 4-week summer intensive program in Minnesota, organized by textbook author Ross King. I have no experience with any intensive program, however. Sorry.

Hi, there-

I did the First Year intensive summer program at the UW in Seattle. It was a solid foundation, I got out a lot of it, and it was fun (the teachers and T.A.s were all good). It was 15 credits, and 8 weeks, I think (mid June to mid August), with classes 4 hours a day. I can't speak for the cost, since I had a fellowship.

I'm sure Berkeley's program is good, and if your parents live near there, it's probably your best bet. If you want to go some where even warmer and sunnier than California, the University of Hawaii at Manoa intensive Korean program is highly rated.

There are also programs at private schools, one at Beloit in Wisconsin (maybe what the other poster meant by Minnesota), probably good but more expensive:

I also did third-year Korean at Sogang last summer, and highly recommend it. It was from mid-June to mid-August (10 weeks).

Let me know if you have any other questions!

I'm a Beloit graduate and I have never heard of the Korean summer program before. It must be brand new, there is not even curriculum info available.
