| I want to get away for a long weekend to Japan. Where should I go, Tokyo or Osaka? What are the advantages/disadvantages of these cities? |

You can do day trips easily to Kyoto and Nara from Osaka. If you want to see Japan, go to Osaka. If you want to go to a big, cool city go to Tokyo. |

Same as above..
Tokyo is a monolith. Funky as shit but very overwhelming for a weekend
Osaka is more manageable plus an easy day trip to Nara/Kyoto is a bonus... |

| Osaka has its charms. I'd also consider Sapporo. A bit off the beaten path but unlike any Asian city you'll ever visit. The whole city was laid out by Westerners hired to design the city. They designed it on a grid system. Beautiful city and really beautiful women. |

Was it really??? That really explains it. When I went there for Yuki matsuri a while back, I was taken back by the city itself. Still, to the OP, I don't think you want to go to a western style city if you are traveling to Japan. Go home to that. If you had time, maybe, but go to Osaka. |

I'd go with Osaka too for the same reasons.
I went to Tokyo recently for 4 days.. saw quite a bit.. but the city is MASSIVE.. and honestly speaking.. the other two times in Osaka.. the feel was more or less the same.
But flights and lodging are generally a little cheaper for Osaka.. plus the Kobe or Kyoto from Osaka is kinda nice.. compared to Tokyo where you'd just be subway riding around the city to see more stuff of the same city. |

I'm not saying it's a western city because westerners designed it. I don't know many western cities that were planned along similar lines. It's just unique in the city's grid system and nice to see an Asian city that was planned with some sober minds. |

Oh, I think it would be a wonderful place to visit and you are right, you get a wierd feeling like you are still in Asia but not really. I just don't think it is wise with his time constraints. |

I lived in Sapporo for a bit and visited over 10 times (it was my ex girlfriends home town) and it is a very well laid-out city and a visit to the Sapporo beer factory is a must..
Just don't go in winter, it is frigging freezing...
The ice sculpting contest is awesome though |

Are the businesses also spread out, where it takes awhile to walk to each one? More car-culture oriented? Just curious without having been to Sapporo myself. |
