I know from personal experience that an arts degree DOES get you a job in a hagwon. Surely that fact scores brownie points with the apologists? Laughing

And BTW, to all those who put down BAs; is anyone here jealous of J. K. Rowling? Laughing Laughing Laughing

Degrees have a few extra benefits. Did you know that people who graduate with a bachelors have a (between 85 - 95%, I forget) less chance of developing alzheimer's.

That's good to know Smile

I have a BA Joint Honours in French and German. I am very disappointed by the opportunities open to language graduates.

If anyone was to ask me whether I thought it was worth going to university today, I would say yes if you are thinking about any vocational subject e.g. medicine, dentistry. If not, you would be wasting your time.

Hey, it means you can work in Korea!

I was actually surprised by my deree. I did it basically because I thought it wold lead to a decent job. So when I actually found myself getting a lot out of the study I was shocked.

It just depends what you are planning to do when you graduate. A lot of people never use the subjects they studied - it's more the status of having a degree.

Well, I would have liked to have used the subjects I studied. But, I can't stomach working in an office and teaching in the UK these days is the pits.
BUT, the good thing about my degree was I got to spend a year living in France and Germany Smile

Is anyone jealous of Freddie Mercury (BFA Art & Design, I think)? Or Sting (BEd?) Besides, Bill Gates was a dropout!...

It's silly to make these comparisons, especially for people who took their degrees in a different world, three decades ago. No one here is jealous of Shakespeare?... no degree! Cool

The joke is reality for a lot of people who teach English in Korea for years and later go back to their home countries.

Yes. I am aware of the truth of that 'joke'. I have a friend (B.A., History) currently teaching english in China. He had returned to Canada after some years teaching in Asia and the best job he could find was bouncing drunks and keeping the peace at a Salvation Army hostel on the seedy side of town. He has excellent ability and a good strong mind; but still he could not find decent work.

Then why did you post this line in the first place, silly (your words, not mine)?

It's also rather pathetic how some who do go home moan and whine about how they can't get jobs, when DUH, you need skills, marketing and the like to get them. Being abroad for a while usually reduces your marketability in your home job market considerably, and thus you need to find out what you can do to get back in the mainstream.

I remember this one Aussie who moaned that he couldn't find anything other than telemarketing or charity work, then at the end of the thread, he just casually mentioned he never finished university.

i have a B.A. in Anthropology, but a M.S. in Geophysics. Its all the same. You either luck out and win the job lotery shortly after graduation or you end up working as a waiter or retail sales clerk. Who you know and being in the right place at the right time. You can have the West.

I disagree, I've known people who got plum jobs with their useless degrees even in the worst of job markets. Some just know what to say at interviews that land them jobs, even if their work history is filled with job-hopping, or just have that magic touch. And well, that magic touch isn't innate, you can learn how to write a better resume, do better in interviews and the like.

Disagree all you want to. The sheer numbers of highly educated, unemployed people in the West are a testement. There are lots of other factors as well - your age, your gender, and most importanly - the person interviewing you. I wouldn't have have a job in the West now no matter what you paid me. I live by the beach and have money to burn. Way cooler thatn living in podunk Illinois no matter what the job.

Judging by the spelling and other errors in your post, I can see why you wouldn't work (or maybe couldn't) in the West.

Something that always makes me smile is when I get accused of not being able to get a job, or "cut it" back home by a fellow expat living and working in Korea. F### you Yaya.
