Well if you north americans get a thread, we do to! so go ahead, ask away.

I'll save some of you the trouble and do a bit of self-analyzing.....

"why do kiwi men like shaggin sheep?"

because they are soft, cuddly, and don't answer back.

If I had a week to visit New Zealand, what would you recommend I see and do? And what foods are especially good there? New Zealand is a possible choice for my summer vacation.

Well, the first western person to find New Zealand was not Captain Cook ( he was the first to actually set foot on the country. But New Zealand was discovered by a dutchman called Abel Tasman. Zealand is a part of Holland as I understand, so, "new" Zealand.

possibly offensive question (though I REALLY don't want it to be):
The Maori people have some of the coolest tribal tatoos that I have ever seen. Do they have special significance, or just look cool?

When I visited NZ, invariably, the people from the South Island asked if I thought they were friendlier than the people of the North Island. I hadn't noticed any particular difference, but quickly learned to nod and say, "Why yes, now that you mention it."

What was going on?

Yes they have special significance. Some tell stories, some donate particular tribes.

They really are scarce down there, im suprised you actually found life. I suppose they were just happy to have someone to talk to, rather than just sheep telling them they were nice. Wink

Yeah, they are pretty choice eh? Not very nice if someone with no affiliation at all to a maori tribe, or history should be addorned with them. AKA robbie williams. little bit of an uproar over that one.

well a week aint very long now, so your best bet would be to rent a car, head noerth till you cant go no more, find the guy with dreads, ask hiom to hook a brother up, go forth to the nearest service station, grab a steak and cheese pie, go find yourself a nice place to camp on the beach, pitch a tent, shoot up to the local fish'n'chip shop order a feed of fish and chips, loaf a bread, watties tomato sauce, roll yourself a nice fat one, relax with a bottle of nz finest wine or brew (monteiths, or macs gold!!) and kick back and watch the sun go down. you cant beat that i think! now which kiwi dares to beat that! go on, im putting it out there, challenge my perfect week!

Kiwiboy~ I agree, almost perfection. THink I would add an open fire on the beach with roasted spuds in tin foil thrown on the fire, and a nice fat rainbow trout caught on the fly that afternoon sizzling with butter. Oh, and some night swimming, skinny dipping on empty beach all to yourself^*

That's a new zealand myth that got started, way back, in a time when perhaps it might have been noticably true, or not, and now just gets repeated. The south islanders have to have something you see, cause the north has all the art, politics, and money...

I'm a proud south islander from the sunny tasman bay area, city of Nelson, a mix of "first four ships" families ( ie old money ) and hippies. Good combo, they keep each other in check and the town has a nice balance. We don't have rugby or farming, so that's a bonus...very classy area...

Why are Northerners soft?
And does it annoy the women?

I would put a Samoan bouncer from one of wellington or auckland's seedy night clubs against the hardest man you can find in the south, and bet my life savings on it without raising a heartbeat...

Is there a big rivalry between the south and north? (serious question)

Er, only between members of the society that are a few planks short of a stack of wood. Not really no, unless there's a rugby game on.

Where's the best place in NZ for a young family to live?

Taking into account;
jobs,
property prices,
amenities,
safety,
weather,
beauty.

(Yes. I have always thought of moving there!)
