Are there any chicks in here that are members of this health club? I'm looking for someone to go to the bellydance class with me on Tuesday nights around 9:30. I went last week, and it was really fun, but I was the only foreigner and it would be so much more fun if someone else went with me. Any takers?

Oh, honey. The prices are worth it. I love this place. They have some great classes with great teachers, excellent equipment that even a dumbass like me can use effectively.

The bellydance class is back?! It was off the schedule when my membership expired in march. Now that it is back on, they might have some hope of getting me back in. Though the prices are outrageous...though I find that the way with most gyms here. I went to a tiny little Kafa place, that's not on my way home, it was in the basement, it was small with few machines, and they wanted almost as much as California Fitness.

I miss bellydancing! Though, there's only so much you can learn in a fitness class.

How much are memberships at California Fitness? They've opened one up in Myeong-dong (I am sure they'll find lots of suckers there to part with their parent's money). I think gym memberships are a total rip off in this country - especially when you take in account people's salaries and the general costs of living. Buy yourself a pair of decent shoes and find a place to jog. Unless you're a professional athlete, you can live without the fancy machines.

I don't think they are a complete rip off. It just pays to shop around and "negotiate" as you would if you were looking for a gym at home.

My main reason for joining a gym was the group exercise classes. I get bored with just treadmill and machines, plus they add variety to your workout.

I agree that the prices are high, but what are you supposed to do if you don't like running (e.g. want a rowing machine, stairmaster, etcetera) or want to use non-fancy "machines" like free weights?

60,000/month is not unreasonable.

If you're dedicated and hit the gym at least 3 times a week, it's well worth the money. Jogging and running burn calories during exercise and are good for your health, but I prefer to build lean muscle that burns fat for me around the clock by maintaining a heavy lifting routine.

I play full-court basketball twice a week for heavy cardio on top of 30-40 minute warm-up runs twice a week in the gym.

Now if I could only quick drinking... Confused

How much is it these days at California WOW?

50,000 ~ 60,000 would be okay, but not much more than that. I've heard that California Fitness charges well above the 100,000 won / month level.
I was paying 50,000 won, but got smart watching the Koreans. Young Koreans who get sucked in by advertising and trends join gyms. Older Koreans hike the mountains for FREE, which by the way, will kick your ass harder than any of those dance classes. Oh, well...it's your money.

I paid 1.3 for 2 years or 55k/month well worth it since I can use it in the states, Hong Kong and Bangkok.

Only beef I have with them is the myeongdong club is too small, wish I could go back to Apu but its too far from me now

I'd never join a gym called California Fitness. The name itself just screams pretentiousness. I can just see all these people posing on the machines while wearing the latest $200 workout wear, reading fashion magazines on the stairmaster machines not drinking shakes, but low fat strawberry smoothies. Oh please, get me outta here! Rolling Eyes

I was a California Fitness in Gangnam last night and I saw none of the people that you have described.

Maybe you should go for a look around. Don't knock it until you have tried it.

Its true California Fitness is expensive and annoying since you have to pay all up front. But you can negotiate! They even let me pay in a couple of installments.
For me California Fitness is worth it because I do Bikram Yoga. And even in the States a membership to Birkram yoga only is more than what I'm paying here at Cali WOW. Plus at Cali I have duel membership so I can take any classes and use the gym. Also the shower rooms are amazing. Love to have access to sauna and jacuzzi. Well worth it in my opinion.
They even have a womens only work out floor for those who don't want to sweat it up and pump iron in front of men.
