So...I am crawling home last night along Namsan road when police cars zoom ahead of me, lights and sirens blaring and block off the road at the intersection of Namsan Library and the road up to the tower. The cops were disorganised and jumping out of the cars - I didn't know why. Then moments later motocycles and a few cars in a group come racing towards them - the boyracers with flashy lights and stereos I've seen countless times on this road before.

Anyway, they see the cops and screech to turn around, but there are also cops behind them who'd followed them there. They were obviously trapping them. One young cop ran right up to a white car and bashed the hood (bonnet) of the car, and there was a massive boom sound. I moved up to watch it unfold. The other bikes were trapped and knocked one another. The riders sprinted for it - girls and guys - right through the Goethe Institut which is located on the road, right where they'd been trapped. The police were on foot and chasing them like crazy, pulling and dragging them. Most of the kids gave up pretty fast. I watched on 'cos I was really thinking the police were going to lay into the kids and hit them. They didn't, but the police did trash some of the bikes pretty badly, pulling off the added features and dumping the bikes together and kicking them. Very strong smell of fuel about.

The police still let normal cars pass through the area, and more boyracers passed through - the police eventually realised they had to grab them too and trapped about 5-6 more cars, swearing and yelling at the drivers. They were made to come out, and the police parked there cars.

The scene was weird, all these teens (?) were standing about, about ten that I saw were arrested, and the others had their phones out photographng/filming it all. I stood round like a curious odd foreigner, one cop asked me to move my car (it wasn't mine, I was on foot). I chatted to some of the kids, and another cop - I asked what was illegal about this (watching also how the cops did their job...warily - I have a huge distruxst of the Korean police, see my other posts), and he said it was all the extras on the vehicles. One car even had to take off its spoiler. The cop I was talking to asked where I was from (NZ), and chatted about living in Timaru and Invercargill for two years (WTF?!....crusty places to live!!).

All in all an interesting way to end my Saturday night - the cops were really badly organised, and IMHO were a bit rough on bashing up the cars and bikes. Anyone else hear about this??

I hate those kids...they rip through crosswalks worse than buses and taxis - pack of 10-20 of them zigzagging, speeding, and being plain asses...looking like a pack of MadMax'ers metrosexualized....

I tend to keep to myself in most cases here, but I would of stood there and applauded the cops on this one...

I hate the young idiots on those motorized kick boards or those super mini motorbikes. The suckers that are like 1 foot off the ground and make one invisible to car traffic. Oddly they're the only ones who ever choose to use their motorbikes on a road...

This was most likely part of the crackdown the annouced on the news. Kids are getting out of hand while traveling in packs. As a previouse owner of a Ninja ZX-7 I'm just waiting for one of these guys to start killing themsevles.

.....at last - the police are finally doing the job they are supposed to -

http://galleryimage.naver.com/1/2003-11/13/01/23m2442m0.jpg

I applaud and fully support the crack down on child hooligans roaming the streets of Seoul.....

http://galleryimage.naver.com/1/2003-11/30/10/23m2688m0.jpg

It sounds as if the biker-boys tried to make a run for it - but korean police are well prepared these days...

http://galleryimage.naver.com/1/2004-02/29/36/23m4803m1.jpg

the days when I first came to korea - when just holding hands in public was frowned upon in Korea - things have changed so fast (in such a short number of years) to an extent where young adolescents and kids are roaming the streets in groups - causing all sorts of public greviences...

http://galleryimage.naver.com/1/2003-10/29/17/23m2205m0.jpg

http://galleryimage.naver.com/1/2003-10/16/47/23m2052m0.jpg

I for one am also against the crazy holigans on their latest gadget cycles -

http://galleryimage.naver.com/1/2004-01/09/21/23m3575m1.jpg

The police are just trying to clean things up before someone gets hurt....

http://galleryimage.naver.com/1/2003-11/05/50/23m2328m0.jpg

I guess Koreans have a hatred against all things "foreign" (as all foreigners are bad) - and Korean parents will always argue that their kids are perfect little angels....

http://galleryimage.naver.com/1/2003-12/14/02/23m2952m1.jpg

but western movies/games have certainly been adopted quickly by the young generation of koreans -

http://galleryimage.naver.com/1/2003-10/29/11/23m2214m0.jpg

turning them into young fools who would rather play crazy in the classroom instead of studying -

http://galleryimage.naver.com/1/2004-01/08/15/23m3543m0.jpg

and korean kids no longer have any respect for their elders...

http://galleryimage.naver.com/1/2003-10/13/51/23m1982m0.jpg

who knows what they will be up to next....

http://galleryimage.naver.com/1/2003-12/04/23/23m2782m0.jpg

I guess in a few more years the country will have gone to the dogs...

What did they do?

Driving in a pack is not a crime.

Just copy and paste into a new window. The second-to-last one was disgusting as hell. I would have made the little s.hit eat it and then beat the c.rap out of him!

Someone asked about the legality of the "boy racers". Here's the low-down:

1) Underage with no licences

2) No helmets

3) Ignore speed limits (although, who doesn't?)

4) Make all sorts of ruckus at all hours of the night

5) Illegally mod their bikes

6) Most of the bikes are stolen

7) It is HIGHLY illegal for boys/men to hold each other while riding, like sissies. The correct procedure is to hold the seat or nothing at all. Unless of course one truly is "out and proud". In that case, more power to you.

They drill holes in their mufflers (or something like that) which is why, when they rev their engines, the thunderous noise makes nearby window panes practically rattle right out of their frames.

Just what this place needs, -more noise.

And they drive everywhere (through school zones, past apartment complexes, etc.) and at all times (including the dead of night) making this racket.

I can't stand those a$$holes.

That's why I love the fact that the cops kicked the crap out of their bikes.

If I had been there, I would have joined them.

Yay, cops! Good job!!
