Best week in New Zealand - Where to score some Herb? - Which is friendlier, North or South ...... one simple answer ....

The West Coast. Hokitika / Greymouth. Especially for that one weekend in March (if I remember rightly) when the Wild Food Festival is on. A feast of Worm Truffles, Sheep/Cow testic1es, Huhu grubs, Kangaroo, Crocodile (the imported wild food), Wild Boar, Venison ... Live music, Campfires on the beach, and of the course the Beer .. the real stuff, brewed locally by Monteiths.
HINT - turn up at the Monteiths brewery in Greymouth, just a few minutes from closing on a Thursday or Friday - and you are most likely going to be invited to 'hang around and help yourself' while the staff get on the brew. *grin*

Hokitika? Um, bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt! Wrong! That whole area, the upper west coast of the south island, has 250 days of rain a year! And the rest of the time it's cloudy! And I lived there. Apart from that food festival, which I might is extremely quirky and only interesting to a very weird and niche type of person, there is simply nothing happening there and no culture to speak of. It's also a rough and rugged coastline, good to look at on the way through, but there really f all to do there except go tramping.
If I had one week in New Zealand I would not go anywhere near the place.

I would go to Abel Tasman National Park in the Golden Bay area, at the top of the south island. It is stunning, and has long golden sand beaches and lush deep greenery that comes right down to the beach front. The weather is tropical, it has the most sunshine hours of anywhere in the country. I would also get myself to the Coromandel Peninsular, for pretty much the same reasons. Or as has been stated, the Bay of Islands. When it comes to spending time in NZ, get yourself to a beach quick smart...

And for a spot of culture and nightlife, you must go out for a weekend in Wellington. Auckland has the money and the yatchs, but Wellington has the politics, the art, the cafes, restaraunts, dance clubs, and all the interesting people!

When New Zealand becomes a state of Australia, do you all promise to stay over there?
