The draft contract to teach in Korea that I am currently working on, initially had 5 days paid sick leave, & this has been amended to 3 days paid sick leavem in the final version. I am not overly concerned about this, but what is the benchmark in Korea, for paid sick days?

In China & Australia it is 10 days. Some contracts in Korea I looked at had zero days permitted. Is it entirely dependent on what the employer is prepared to offer?

I get 7 sick days, or 15 sick days with a doctor's note. Although, I have to make up the classes that I miss.

I have found if you can into work and show yourself to be visibly sick then they are much more accepting of you taking the day off. i suppose they need to see the evidence...

The days of taking a "sickie" because you fell like one do not exist in Korea....

I just saw a contract that offered only 2 UNpaid sick days. And you had to call in 8 hours before classes start and they start at 630am. Absurd.

I get 15 days paid sick leave (public school system); and took them all when I broke my clavicle. The doctor originally wanted to hospitalize me for three weeks, but I 'escaped' that K 'hell-hole' after 10 days. Back home, I wouldn't have spent a singe day in the hospital (but the is K-land). If worked at a hogwan, I probably would have lost my job.

what if you DO sign a contract that stipulates no sick days (in fact they make us pay for subs if we are sick--a typical "sick day" can cost up to 200,000 won)???

i heard that the law overrides an illegal stipulation in a contract, but i've also heard that the foreigner is s.o.l. if they're dumb enough to sign such a contract?

the bottom line is if i'm sick i don't want to pay for a sub.. it's not like we're working at a lumberyard........pay isn't hourly at most hagwons i know of.

so can i just stick it to them? they won't *deduct* my pay because i think deep down they know it's illegal (our payments are automatically distributed by the bank each month)

In truth, they prefer that you drop dead in front of them, but only if you bring a doctor's note. No note, they plop your corpse in front of the kiddies.
