|

After my contract finishes at my hogwon job, I'm considering doing my CELTA. Basically I'm just wondering what kinds of jobs and pay I can expect if I have the CELTA with one year teaching experience. I would like to avoid working in a hogwon again for my next job.
Also, I'd like to hear more people's experiences teaching adults. I work with children now and I'm just tired of dealing with behavior issues on a daily basis. I feel like a babysitter more than a teacher. What are the main challenges teaching adults?
Thanks |

Even if you only plan to teach another year, Id recommend a CELTA. Unless youre the one exceptional case where you get a lousy teacher, poor experience, etc. (which Ive never heard happening) itll be very worth it.
I did one, my husband did one two years later, Id say 75% of my friends have done them, even after they already had MAs in TESOL. It teaches you skills for communication that are useful outside the classroom. In biz school I applied the principles I learned to my in-class presentations.
Basically, if you plan to work with people in the future, particularly people with whom you do not share the same first language, its a good thing.
Now, did it help me get a better job? No. I already had a better job, (at a uni) but wasnt making the most of it, with giant class sizes.
Did it get me a raise? No. The school was a bit impressed that I cared enough to get certified, but in the end it made no difference with them.
Did it help with my sanity? Absolutely. After one year of teaching Id had a pile of lessons that were pure gold, some that were so-so, and some which always flopped. It seemed random to me.. I just didnt get why some worked and others didnt.
After my CELTA, I could take the gold I had, break it down, and make more gold. I knew I could always be an effective teacher. I never again lay away at night the night before wondering what I'd be teaching at 7am the next morning. |

The CELTA is great. You learn tons of stuff, as hard as that might be to believe in only 4 weeks. I can say I would do it again if I had the choice .
Lastly, Simone, give me a CELTA trained teacher over an MA anyday. I have yet to meet an MA who could teach worth a damn (good university lecturers though) who didn't have a CELTA |
