It's called Wharowha. I've been going to this place for months. I always enjoyed the food there. High-class galbi and nice side dishes.
Now Lamb is on the menu!! I had about 6 lamb chops there recently. Absolutely delicious! Really tender and tasty lamb.
You can also buy wine there. The owner has a good knowledge of wine and keeps a very interesting wine list.
The owner is friendly and speaks great English. He was a little worried that he wouldn't sell his lamb as Koreans generally turn their nose up at lamb.
Anyway, I said I would plug his place on here.
Here's the map and link.

Give it a try. It's a really classy place. |

I can't tell where anything is on that map- where's the restaurant? Where's the subway? Where's the WalMart (for reference)?
Anyway, I will have to remember this- lamb is yummy! |

Meat is Murder.
And what the small handful of Korean galbi restaurants which even offer it have done to lamb is something far worse than murder. The few we've bothered giving a try, anyway. People will be raving (based on third-hand accounts) how great it is. We get there, and we immediately become apprehensive when the waitress motions us to sit on the floor as there are no tables. That was Red Flag #1.
Then we look at the menu, and it's Korean concoctions familiar to us all but they've substituted lamb for pork, lamb for beef, etc. (Lamb-gyop-ssal anyone? No, I thought not. Lamb-jook! No? Lamb Bulgogi?) Red Flag #2
The poor fools, they tried every trick in the playbook, even putting up big bad-ass signs on the roof trying to convince Korean men that lamb is second only to Viagra for treating erectile dysfunction: "SHTAMINUH!! SHTAMINUH OOMSHIK!!!" Red Flag #3 (Dr. Hwang is an equity partner in the place, I recall.)
Finding nothing on the menu or on the tables of other customers vaguely reminiscent of lamb in its proper form (Red Flag #4), we got up and left.
Oh what simple weeds they are, to be sure. (<-- That's a Homer laugh.) But if Eamo of all people says this new place is any good -- based on his own experience -- then okay. I'll try. |

The subway is in the upper left hand corner; it says "Seolleung Subway Stop Exit 1." |

I feel your pain Jongnoguru. I have often left Korean restaurants feeling bewildered, banjaxed and ripped-off, after being promised authentic such-and-such only to be given bizzare Korean substitutes.
But don't fear. This place does it so simply you can't go wrong. Nice lamb chops done on a real charcoal grill. They even had a British friend send a dozen jars of Colemans Mint Sauce!!!! You'll think you're at your auntie's!!!
Oh, and they have tables and chairs.....Tasteful decor throughout! |

I've noticed tons of lamb skewer places going up in HongDae the last year or two.
Never saw any lamb galbi type places.. but the lamb skewer places are pretty good. |

I just had it tonight upon eamo's recommendations.
It was good, but nothing to rave nuts about. I think that it would be better with better sauce. I didn't ask for it and I just took what they gave me: a greenish pesto type sauce. I didn't ask what it was and I just ate it as I was told. My daughter didn't eat too much of the lamb either and she's a big meat fan.
Lamb is a rare kinda meat in Korea so it is good if you like lamb in general.
I'm not too picky and I ate to my hearts content. It is good meat but for the 19,000 won per serving of two lamb chops (they looked small), I think you could do better. Meat is meat though and the people you go with and the time that you have makes a lot of difference.
I ate at that place before a few times, but I didn't know that they had lamb until tonight. |

i don't think i would want lamb kalbi, honestly. when i think of lamb, i think of it roasted slowly for several hours. i never cared for lamb chops on the grill either. i love kalbi, but i'll stick to the pork and beef, etc.
on this topic, i had duck kalbi one time and it sucked. anyone tried it? i love duck, but i will stick to the roasted beijing variety.
koreans can't do fushion cuisine. octopus on your pizza, anyone? no thanks. |

It always seems to me Korean maps invariably use a Popeye's restaurant as one of their cardinal reference points. |

Just need to correct you on a few points Xerxes...
The 'greenish pesto type sauce' is actually real Colemans Mint Sauce. Especially brought over from England. It's what most Brits put on their lamb. It's a real classic back in blighty.
A portion is 18,000 won. Not 19,000. This is for two, in my opinion, very good, medium-sized chops. The owner tells me that the meat, without bones, weighs in at a healthy 150 grams. Average portion size for meat restaurants. Yes, it my not be a pig-out, but then I've always had to order two portions per person in galbi restaurants to even start feeling full.
Wharowha isn't that kind of cheap galbi joint. The owner prides himself on the quality of meat he sells. It costs more for sure. Because it really is good. This restaurant has been on TV twice because if offers something a little different.
I know you said you actually enjoyed your lamb but I had to clear up the points about the sauce and the price/portions. |
