Makes pretty much any other humanitarian crisis seem like small fry at the moment. I must confess I didn't know a great deal about this one, but starting here and following the links (International Crisis Group is good for detailed info) you can glean quite a bit of info. I usually avoid anything with a star tag on it, but I have to hand it to her, if nothing else, its made me aware of the situation. Guess I had my conscience pricked tonight.

Interesting link. I used to know a former Congolese MP who fled to Australia when Kabila got in. He wouldn't return there for fear of his life, despite leaving a wife and family behind.

The best thing westerners could've done for Africa would've been to keep ruling it. The result of pulling out a few decades ago is the cesspit of corruption and suffering you see now.

Either way, I'll be over there to get footage of Mokele mbembe as soon as the dust settles.

The rumble in the jungle. Listen for yourself..

I'll personally buy you a beer if you get the footage. From a Muslim no less. As regards westerners ruling the place, King Leopold used the place as his own personal plantation and kept locals in a state of virtual slavery. References are made to the period in comparison with the current strife. His actions were partially responsible for movements to end colonialism. After decolonization, Lamumba and Mbutu were pawns in the cold war, the latter triumphing under CIA tutelage and subsequently proceeded to plunder the country of its resources with western backing. I digress but whites have no better record there than blacks.
