Neil Young is about to put out an anti-war/anti-war in Iraq, protest album. Sounds cool and if it gets by the music execs (doubtful without being watered down), it would be a breath of fresh air. Titles include --
Impeach Bush and Never Kill Again

Neil Young urges Bush impeachment on protest album By Steve Gorman
1 minute ago
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Veteran rocker Neil Young has recorded a protest album featuring an anti- Iraq war track with "a holy vow to never kill again" and a song titled "Let's Impeach the President," the singer said on Monday.
The 10-track set, called "Living with War," was recorded this month by a "power trio" -- electric guitar, bass and drums -- plus trumpet and a 100 voices, the 60-year-old Canadian-born musician announced on his Web site.
Young's longtime manager, Elliot Roberts, told Reuters the album, which has been the subject of Internet buzz for several days, will be played for executives at his label, Warner Music Group's Reprise Records, on Tuesday.
"It's devoted to the state of America, or the direction that America is moving in," Roberts said of the album.
In a message crawl along the bottom of his Web site, Young drew parallels to two of the leading protest singers of the 1960s, saying of his new record: "I think it is a metal version of Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan ... metal folk protest?"
The crawl goes on to reveal the lyrics of the album's title track, with such lines as: "I raise my hand in peace ... I never bow to the laws of the thought police ... I take a holy vow ... to never kill again ...
"In the big hotels ... in the mosques and the doors of the old museum ... I take a holy vow ... to never kill again."
Roberts confirmed that a separate song on the album is titled "Let's Impeach the President." He declined to disclose any further details about the record.
But according to some online reports, the song accuses President George W. Bush of "lying" and features a rap with Bush's voice set against a choir singing "flip-flop."
One member of that choir, a California-based musician, wrote on a "blog" entry last Friday that the recording session wrapped with an a capella version of "America the Beautiful."
Young's latest offering comes just seven months after the release of his last album, "Prairie Wind," which has sold about 450,000 U.S. copies as of last week, according to sales tracking service Nielsen SounScan.
Music from that album was featured in the recent concert film "Neil Young: Heart of Gold," directed by Jonathan Demme.
"Living with War" appears to bring Young full circle from a more pro-Bush administration stance he took in the months following the September 11 attacks.
Not long after recording the song "Let's Roll," a tribute to passengers who apparently fought back against hijackers on doomed United Airlines Flight 93 over Pennsylvania, Young came out publicly in support of the U.S. Patriot Act.
The legislation, which gave law enforcement authorities broad new powers aimed at bolstering the administration's war on terror, was harshly criticized by some as threatening Americans' civil liberties.
"Living with War" is hardly the first work by Young to take on the political establishment. As part of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, in 1970, Young wrote and recorded the song "Ohio," a song about the four Kent State University students killed by National Guard troops during an anti-Vietnam war rally. |

Neil Young's protest album heads to Internet first
By Steve Gorman
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Neil Young's newly recorded protest album "Living With War," including a song calling for the impeachment of President Bush, will be posted for free Internet streaming next week, his label said on Friday.
Starting April 28, fans can log onto Young's Web site, www.neilyoung.com, and listen to the 10-track collection in its entirety, free of charge, said Bill Bentley, a spokesman for Warner Music Group's Reprise Records.
The album will first become commercially available as a digital download beginning May 2, "and we plan to get it into retail stores as soon after that as we can get them manufactured," Bentley said. |

Conan O'Brian just started and he's the musical guest.
Funny thing is, it's a repeat from Nov 01. |

I always thought it came from Bruce Springsteen "Well I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk" (Thunder Road) |

Well, Steve Earle did just that a couple of years ago. He even won a Grammy for it. Heck, he started it all with his 'John Walker's Blues'. |

Alas, the US constitution (or something) prevents those who weren't born in the States from becoming president.

You did know that Mitchum recorded "The Ballad of Thunder Road":
(CHORUS)
And there was thunder, thunder over Thunder Road
Thunder was his engine, and white lightning was his load
There was moonshine, moonshine to quench the Devils thirst
The law they swore they'd get him, but the Devil got him first.
On the first of April, nineteen fifty-four...
It was a pretty good hit way back when. The movie is pretty good, too, although the car chases seem pretty dated now.
As for igtg's ID, I thought he just free associated from Bryan Adams:
I got my first real six-string
Bought it at the five-and-dime
Played it till my fingers bled
It was the summer of 69 |

Thanks for the heads up, Neil is a great artist for sure.
DD,
that place in North Ontario Niel talks about is Thunder Bay, although he is from Winnipeg he spent many of his "lean" years living, writing and playing in Thunder Bay.
I happen to be from Thunder Bay and also lived in Winnipeg for a few years and have been lucky to see him live three times. A benefit concert in Winnipeg with the Guess Who, great outdoor show.
The second time was in Minneapolis also a great show.
The third time was the best though, I was back in Thunder Bay for a two month holiday and my buddy who is a huge fan of Niel was told by someone that a suprise guest was going to play in a local pub.
The word going around was that Niel was going to be the suprise artist. Five of us decided to check it out and about 11:30 out comes Niel Young to a packed and roaring crowd. He played for alomost two hours it was awesome, he played all the classics.
I will be sure to download the new CD, I just finished listening to it, classic Niel Young. |

A friend of mine caught him at the Maples Inn in Pointe Claire, Quebec like that. Had a beer with him after he played and said he was a really cool, normal guy to talk to. |

Yeah, Neil is Neil......
I love the story about him being the character witness for his son, charged with drug possession. ......
His son was facing some hard time, 3rd time up, so the father went to court and acted as a character witness, not as a father..........he was allowed , under the criminal code, being a "person of public merit"......his son got off with community service and probably a talking to by "Dad" about playing the system, learning how to beat the system. I think his present endeavour is probably about that sort of philosophy - Neil loves and gets off through , beating the system through their own rules.......he's a rocker who plays dumb but is extremely savyyyyyyyyy
About Northern Ontario. I grew up on a commune in N. Ontario. Neil visited and played back in early 72. The place in his heart isn't that (my home or parents, hippies) but rather Matheson. I've heard the story a million times, Neil the young puppy , in love.......among the mosquitoes and horny and shit faced with peace and love as hell.....NOT Thunder Bay, rather a farm........there are VERY few cranes in Thunder Bay, as the next verse alludes.....but I'm sure Neil loves Thunder Bay!!!!

There's bodies floatin' on Canal and the levees gone to Hell
Martha, get me my sixteen gauge and some dry shells
How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live?
New Orleans '06
This song was written by Blind Alfred Reed and recorded a month after the crash of '29 that heralded the Great Depression. I first heard it on Ry Cooder's self - titled debut album (1970). To his arrangement we owe a debt. I kept the "doctor" first verse by Reed then wrote three others with a mind to the great trials the people of New Orleans have faced this year.
STREAM IT HERE!
http://www.sonybmgemail.com/arch/Hit?m=o3zcm9m3o&u=oqqjt
Here are the full lyrics:
Well, the doctor comes 'round here with his face all bright
And he says "in a little while you'll be alright"
All he gives is a humbug pill, a dose of dope and a great big bill
Tell me, how can a poor man stand such times and live?
He says "me and my old school pals had some might high times down here
And what happened to you poor black folks, well it just ain't fair"
He took a look around gave a little pep talk, said "I'm with you" then he took a little walk
Tell me, how can a poor man stand such times and live?
There's bodies floatin' on Canal and the levees gone to Hell
Martha, get me my sixteen gauge and some dry shells
Them who's got got out of town
And them who ain't got left to drown
Tell me, how can a poor man stand such times and live?
I got family scattered from Texas all the way to Baltimore
And I ain't got no home in this world no more
Gonna be a judgment that's a fact, a righteous train rollin' down this track
Tell me, how can a poor man stand such times and live?
- Bruce Springsteen, April 27, 2006 |
