Dear Professional Colleagues and Friends of KOTESOL,

I would like to open an invitation to all of you to the first annual Korea TESOL National Conference to be held at Hoseo University on May 13, 2006. We are very excited to host this founding event and hope to set the standard for future Korea TESOL National Conferences.

This years theme is Helping Students Open Doors to Learning; Sharing What Works in Korean ELT Classrooms. In line with this theme, I invite you to open doors for yourself that inform and enrich your various teaching contexts by attending some of our more than 32 expected presentations and workshops along with round table discussions on the hottest topics in ESL today.

Many of these, in addition to our plenary and featured speakers, who include Dr Paul Nation, Dr. Sei-Kyoung Cho, Caroline Linse, Dr Thomas Santos, Yoo Gye-Hyoung, and David Paul, are sure to revitalize your teaching and research. Whether you are teaching in public, private, or post-secondary, the range of hands on workshops, down to earth classroom approaches or simply the opportunity for rubbing shoulders and networking, will certainly suit your needs. Make a plan to invest in yourself by attending the daylong conference at Koreas premier ELT national conference.

I look forward to seeing you at this innovative conference, and dont forget to register early to receive your conference discount! Online registration is open from April 10-April30 at http://www.kotesol.org/nationalconference/2006/

Sunny Days

I will be there as well.

And, I would like to hear some discussion on the actual legal longevity of foreign teachers at universities and public schools in Korea. If we are going to assume there is a community of professionals here, we should discuss our tenure potential, shouldn't we?

But the vocabulary lectures will be valuable as well.

Cheers.

I heard the rumors at KOTESOL international last October. I straight up asked my boss about it, as there are several at my uni who've been here 3-4-5 years... so I was concerned, as was he. Because this would mean a mass hiring...

He later told me these were just recommendations, not requirements. BUT I do know everyone was re-upped for another year. And I think two are over the 5year mark now, so they are getting the better pension rates...

But still, compared to what the K.Professors make...we're still in the peanut bag...

Know of another Prof at another uni, she cant get tenure because she's not in research, she on the teaching side of things. She can't get tenure, but doesnt have the pressure of publish or perish.

Besides most of the "academic" journals that would be respected by the evaluators for tenure are in Korean. Only the abstract or summary is in English. So, are the language skills there for publishing>??

a bit disjointed & rambling...still have more papers to grade! Arrgh

NOT TRUE! Most, if not all, of the journals used to determine 'points' for hiring and promotions here in Korea are internationally rated foreign journals. In fact, there are no Korean journals in the top 30 (the ones most shoot for). Korean journals are catch-alls, and everyone knows it. Koreans publish in them to make their list of publications look better, mostly to students who don't know better. Fellow professionals know the deal, however, and the K-Journals don't stack up.

Just for the record, publishing in the KOTESOL journal won't earn you any points, either! Nice, but without value.

I found that advert to be so unctuous that I won't be attending again, nine years running. Besides being reluctant to be part of any club that would accept me as a member (thank you, Groucho) I really have nothing to learn from a bunch of glad-handing, full- of-themselves EFL teachers who are up to their asses in jargon. Unless there's free beer. Then I might make the journey and impart my wisdom to those who choose to listen, and forget the next day. No, I think I'll stay home and devote my energy to my students.

I knew from reading this message (without a glance at the user ID) who wrote it. Lose the stale Groucho quote!

Meanwhile kotesol is what its members make of it. Your regional chapter, coolsage, offers an affable monthly jargon-free gathering of sincere teachers. We share a useful bit of teacher-talk & socialize.

Sorry, you should probably chip in for your own beer -- no, change that. I'll buy. Drop in sometime. We even pay people to share their "wisdom." Got something interesting to present?

Damn, TESOL had completely slipped my mind! Finally!! Some people who actually want to talk about the work they do!! I work, with only an exception or two, with people who would rather concern themselves with their "authority." In a hagwon? Shocked Shocked

Great criminy cripes...

I'll be there. Don't think I can get there before the first bell, though....

Ah hell, I'll find a way.

Yes, that was ingracious of me. It probably harks back to the early day while I was toiling at a hagwon, and a couple of KOTESOL members came by to sell memberships. These guys were akin to wild-eyed religious zealots (and perhaps that was their back-story, scientologists or jehova's witnesses in disguise), and that tended to put me off about hooking up with such a group. Apparently, they are not the typical members. While I'm still more of an indie than a joiner, if this gathering ever comes my way, I think I can share some useful insights as to how to deal with advanced uni students. Have to pass on this one, though; I've been volunteered to serve at the dreaded 'English Camp' that same week. Anyone who's been there will know the drill: six hours of mandatory English 'activities', followed by ten hours of drinking, topped off by several courses of bad food. In any case, make the most of the conference. If there's anything that's print-worthy, perhaps there's a website for those of us unfortunates who couldn't be there. Cheers.
