would you say 1 out of every 10 jobs is going to have major problems such as late payments, 11 month goodbye notes, shady sending you out to schools type stuff, etc....?

I once applied for a job helping empty septic tanks in Sherwood Park, Alberta. The name of the company was "Sh*t Disturbers". I didn't even get the job!

The misuse of 'literal' is a peeve of mine too.

Cubanlord, I think that your response to Huffdaddy indicates that you don't understand your error.

If that's the case, you literally need to get a dictionary and look up the definition of the word "literally."

Then look at this.

Yeah, like people who can't capitalize, or pluralize their nouns.

Damn, that pisses me off.

Yes, the honeybucket driver has a crap job. Of the many duties of the most maligned and oppressed hogwan teacher, I am quite sure few involve feces.

Excremental, dear Watson; don't confuse "literal" with "figurative".

i once had my heart set on a much sought after position as muck spreader unclogger. it involved standing on the back of a tractor spraying manure all day, and unblocking any pipes that got jammed.

they didn't even give me the job!

You seem to have taken offense at my attempt to explain to you why many people consider your usage of the of the word "literally" to be incorrect.

As I wrote previously, I was under the impression that you didn't understand huffdaddy's response. Rather than simply belittle you for your word choice, I pointed you in a direction that would explain the reason for the some of the responses you were receiving. Perhaps I misunderstood you since I generally use words rather than emoticons to express my ideas.

The Merriam-Webster definition to which you seem to be clinging does, in fact, cite the usage of "literally" as meaning "figuratively."

Here is the definition as per your link:

Quote:
Function: adverb
1 : in a literal sense or manner : ACTUALLY <took the remark literally> <was literally insane>
2 : in effect : VIRTUALLY <will literally turn the world upside down to combat cruelty or injustice -- Norman Cousins>
usage Since some people take sense 2 to be the opposite of sense 1, it has been frequently criticized as a misuse. Instead, the use is pure hyperbole intended to gain emphasis, but it often appears in contexts where no additional emphasis is necessary.

If you knowingly choose to use this word in accordance with the second definition listed above, then have at it. It seems, however, that even the dictionary entry above hedges a bit at giving full legitimacy to this usage.

Why else would it note that "it often appears in contexts where no additional emphasis is necessary?"

I don't understand how your knowledge that "literally" is an adverb could possibly be germaine, nor do I understand your reference to Shakespeare.

Are you suggesting that you are emulating Shakespeare by using figurative language? If so, would you also practice Mozart by randomly striking keys on a piano?
