It is a massive shame Rooney won't be playing in the WC, but I bet the bookmakers up and down the country will be laughing with all the patriotic bets made by punters banking on Wayne bringing home the Golden Boot. Easy money for sure.

Looks like there's going to be quite a distinguished sicklist at the finals anyway because I'm by no means convinced Leo Messi is going to have recovered fully either. Then there's Jan Koller, so massively (no pun intended) key to the Czech Rep. Then of course there's also the great one himself Ronaldo nursing a torn muscle and not taking part in any more of Madrid's season. A WC without Ronaldo would be really depressing.

No knock on Ronaldo, but he's been looking a bit pudgy and disinterested these days. No Ronaldinho would be more depressing.

It is a shame about Rooney. For me, England's chances just took a serious nose dive.

Rooney's expected recovery time is 6 weeks. And it's exactly 6 weeks to the start of the WC. If they do bring him along he'll be unfit anyway. But still dangerous I would say.

I think Sven will still take him and i dont see why he shouldn't. So he wont play the first game, or probably the second but we should still be able to make it through the qualifiers without him, giving him a few more weeks to regain fitness. Remeber what an semi fit Rooney did in the champs league on his first game back?

Worst possible news for any England fan to hear though, Owen doesn't look too good either, our hopes of winning the WC seem to diminish every week!

meta tarsal bones eh... who'd have em...

the thing is, rooney was launching a new boot this week, designed by nike and with extra thin leather and other material, aimed at improving feel and touch. is it any conincidence that these same new lightweight boots also seem to leave the bones of the foot exposed and able to twist and break under a challenge or a fall? the challenge wasn't heavy, but he fell badly and you knew immediately that it was bad.
so, add rooney to the broken metatarsal list of england players which has included beckham, owen, king, neville, murphy...
i doubt very very much if he'll be ready. after the absolute farce over the new manager, this week has been pretty bad for english football. someone else (cole?) will have to step up to fill rooney's big, expensive boots
