Hey everyone,
I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before, but I've noticed that on Dave's anyway, there seems to be relatively few people from the U.S. given it's population relative to some of the other English speaking countries. Why is this? Am I wrong? Do people from the States, given unpopularity in Korea simply teach ESL elsewhere or what? |

Recently the Canadians have made up the largest segment of the expat community here.
My feeling is that there are just as many Americans as before, but the numbers from other countries keeps going up.
The 'unpopularity' of Americans is WAY over-stated, in my opinion. Koreans have issues with the US government and 99% of the time direct their displeasure at the target, not at the people. |

I agree with this. The times that someone has got angry at me for being American (which I'm not) have been pretty rare, and sometimes I even get an 'America, Good", to which I reply "Great, I will be sure to tell one of my American friends", at which point they give me a strange look. |

While the U.S. and its citizens may or may not suffer from "unpopularity in Korea," the following is a fact:
http://search.hankooki.com/times/times_view.php?term=korean+students+u.s.++&path=hankooki3/times/lpage/opinion/200604/kt2006043017463254050.htm&media=kt
Yes, some Americans teach in countries other than Korea and are more active on Dave's international board. Some Americans even visit boards other than this one. Some Americans visit this board and choose not to participate because virtually every topic has been done innumerable times before ala this one. |

What about asking Dave to open a "Newb Discussion Forum"?
But of course, none of us would visit it... |

I don't know . . .
During my six years in Korea (most recently 2003-2005) I met and knew many Americans. Also know many on this board. Had many an event at my apartment where they showed up in good proportion to other nationalities.
They don't dominate the scene - nor should they. |

Americans are entering into the debt ridden lifestyle at earlier ages than before. Most Americans have too many responsibilities to even consider relocating even for a short time to Korea. I was in an ideal position to do so because after my divorce I had liquidated neraly all my material assets and when the opportunity became known to me I jumped on it. I don't know many people who could accomplish that seeing how they have too many anchors keeping them strapped Stateside to support their equity there. |
