Thank you. This is exactly what I'm talking about. Who wants to study a subject that everyone thinks is just about memorizing countries (or states/provinces) and capitals?

I remember a few times being handed a map in school, and being told to label it. We were expected to know where countries were outside of Canada.
I actually remember in a grade 10 class, we were given a world map, and if we couldn't label 100 countries we failed. I just can't remember what class that was, even though I can still picture the teachers face. |

i'm starting to get irked by all of these trims. i made a small post on this thread that is no longer here. i also started a thread on here earlier today that is no longer here. none of what i wrote was in the least bit inflammatory or offensive in any way. i don't normally do this, but i think the mods deserve a rolly eyes from me today...
i mean, for all the trouble i've had in the past few days to even log into this site and suffer the critical error 30 times before i can make a successful post, the least they could do is keep it up for a day.

I don't ever recall being thoroughly drilled on geography in the Canadian school system.

it's topeka. and i can't imagine anyone wanting to know much about kansas anyway. one of the longest drives i ever had was going through there. spent some time there, and never wanted to go back. |

You're joking presumably? If not, that's a strange one from you.
Geography, knowledge of the planet we live on, is one of those things that's just good in itself.
I always loved geography because I was/am interested in the world and places in the world. I would study maps. Actually, the U.S. was always my specialist subject (I'm not American). My friend from Michigan couldn't believe I knew the state capital of MI.
Like someone said above, maybe it's a cultural thing. I'm interested in geography because I'm interested in the world beyond my country's borders. A lot of Americans aren't, which is odd considering it's a country made up of people from all over the world. Having said that, they've successfully forged a melting pot nation where people are American first and Greek, Italian blah blah blah second. I admire that. Doesn't excuse crap geography however, particularly as the thread deals with lack of understanding of US Geography!
I'm gonna make a highly sexist point, but, if you don't like it, you know where you can stick it, right? Geography is a GUY subject. Girls' geography - in my Korean middle school and back home - is largely crap.

I went to school in Florida, which, at least during the time I was in grade school, was ranked near the bottom of the scale with regards to intra-national comparison. That may explain why I never once studied the countries of the world (in school, at least) in any way other than how they affected the US. We never studied state layout, either. I learned that before starting kindergarten, though, due to a nifty little puzzle I had.
The general feeling I got from within the US was that other countries don't really matter. For example, the popular news magazines are about domestic news. Most people probably think the Economist is a US economy magazine.

I struggle with this one. I'm American and know geography extremely well. But 1 out of about 100 non-North Americans have any concept of where Detroit is at (my region's city). So can't figure out when I almost always know their hometown.
My perception is that its the popular conception that even internal American wants to 'educate' the populace and goes off on this geography issue.
If its anything like the 'fattest people' issue that american media focuses and perpetuates.. its quite shocking when you see the US is like 15th or 20th or so in the obesity levels way lower than countries in Latin America, Middle East, etc.
I really think its the US agenda to make people strive for more by exposing those weaknesses.
Kinda the opposite of Korean propoganda or other nations where they only focus on the good things.. American media seems to have an obsession on focusing on the negative.
Plus statistics anyways.. who did they ask? Its 300,000,000 people.. and usually they do a sample of 1,000 if lucky and project it on the rest.. where do they do that? Inner-city middle America? No idea. But overwhelmingly almost ALL internal statitics on the US is almost ALWAYS negative whereas every other country in the world I've ever been is almost ALWAYS positive. |

Seeing as the full definition of geography includes demographics and other stuff about PEOPLE as well as just land, I would say its a valuable subject. If we know more about other people, where and how they live, it could build more tolerance and understanding. Dont you think the world could use some of that right now?? |

It is a national shame.
So is the condescention that drips off of some of the enlightened people who love to post their Schadenfreude about the state of ignorance in the USA. (This time. Sometimes it's other countries.) |
