South Korea has attracted multi-billion dollar project to the Inchon (Incheon) Free Economic Zone (FEZ),
The Ministry of Finance and Economy (MOFE) said yesterday the Inchon municipal government and Atlanta-based global real estate developer, Portman Holdings, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for jointly developing the No. 6 and 8 blocks of the Songdo-Inchon FEZ.
The multi-phased $11 billion project includes construction of twin-towered. 151-story skyscraper, the highest in Northeast Asia.
The project is part of Koreas efforts to transform 1,500 acres of reclaimed land into an unrivaled business hub for Northeast Asia.
Inchon City Mayor Ahn Sang-soo and Portman Holdings vice chairman Jack Portman signed the MOU at the World Trade Club in Atlanta.
The construction consortium led by Portman Holdings plans to complete the tower by August 2010.
Inchon city government and the Portman consortium will finalize the development plans over the next six months, the MOFE said.
The proposed 151-story building, which would be 610 meters tall, would be worlds second-highest tower in the world, after the 160-story Burj Tower in Dubai, the worlds tallest building currently under construction.
``(With) inclusion of the 151-story twin tower in the FEZ, Inchon will be transformed into a world-class business city on par with Shanghai and Dubai," Mayor Ahn said.
Ahn also says the twin tower will become the landmark that symbolizes Korea's future growth potential and opportunities.
``Inchon city government and the Korea's central government will provide all-out support to the Portman consortium," Ahn said.
Portman consortium plans to finance 40 percent of the $11 billion investment through internal financing and raise the remaining 60 percent through investment banks and investment funds both at home and abroad. |

An MOU doesn't really mean a whole heck of a lot; will this actually get built, or will it end up in the discard pile along with Daewoo's Songdo Town tower?

This race for the world's tallest tower has got to stop, it's absolutely pathetic.
(Maybe that answers the above question...) |

Given the building standards here, I'm not sure that building anything with a 'est' in it is such a good idea. |

1625 was when all hell broke loose. I say restrict all new buildings to under the height of St. Olav's Church.
15th century: Miks me peame ehitama kõige suurem ehitus maailmas? Kõrgus on 159 m!
Exactly! I'm with them. Er...not that they used metres back then or anything. |

Lotte was supposed to build the world's tallest building in Busan, but I've heard nothing of that since. |

Another one of your "gems". Some little facts for you:
1. One of the twin towers in KL was built by a Korean construction firm. As far as I know, thats still standing and it was the tallest building for a bit before Taipei 101 went up.
2. Samsung will be building the tallest building in the world in Dubai. |

If you want to understand why skyscrapers are interesting, then you should look into structural engineering. Our understanding of wind dynamics, Tensile strength and other building properties are amazing. |

Cracking towers they are too (and I think that one of the tour guides at the tower said that Samsung built the sky bridge between the towers as wel).
The same website also confirms Samsung are building the Dubai tower. |
