OMG, Peter F'in Crouch. I'd rather see a 4-1-4-1 with a proper holding midfielder releasing Lampard and Gerrard to make the attacking runs up front.

-------------------------Owen--------------------------------

J. Cole--------Lampard--------Gerrard-----------Beckham

-----------------------King/Carrick--------------------------

A. Cole---------Carragher---------Ferdinand----------Neville

I personally favour this, or a slight variation with J Cole playing in behind Owen and Gerrard out on the left. Use Crouch off the bench when all else fails.

Rooney is the difference between England being potentially a very good team, or a fantastic team. No doubt he is a class act and we will miss him. However, with or without Shrek, Brazil are still looking like they'll walk this. Their squad is scary...

If Rooney is not fit then I don't think he should be taken. This is what Eriksson did in the last world cup when he included Beckham, who was not up to par and whose inclusion probably hurt the team.

jaganath69 - I thought you were an Aussie?

You've sneaked Carragher in for Terry without anyone noticing.

From what I can gather, Erikson is allowed to swap any injured squad player for another up until the day before the first game. This gives Rooney until the 9th of june to show significant improvement to merit inclusion. Erikson also said said he 'would take him even he only plays in the final' (hey, at least the guy is optimistic!)
But i think we should draw a line under it and focus on the fit players. It cant be doing the squad morale much good with all the attention and doom-saying surrounding rooney's inclusion/exclusion. As has been mentioned, a partially fit Beckham (with same kind of injury and more recovery time) in the last WC did us no favours...

Exactly. With Cole, Ferdinand and Neville all vying to rush forward, I'd rather see Carragher as the lynchpin.

I'm an Aussie with an English dad, a British passport and lived, worked and payed my taxes in the UK for 4 whole years. Lots of family there, big emotional ties to the mother country and I'm a shameless anglophile.

Thats a good line up but we might need a goalkeeper at some point in the tournament.

Never heard of him.

Could be one of those fairy tale thingies in footy, a la a slightly older Michael Owen 8 years ago.

What's the problem with Jermain Defoe folks? Has he had a bad season and/or unfit? I'm much more ignorant about football these days. All I know is that leaving Defoe out (I know it's only provisional) when there's no Roon or Owen seems very odd.

Defoe never really got going this season and hasn't started many games. Presumably he is first reserve if Rooney or Owen are definitely out, so your last comment doesn't really apply.

Walcott has immense pace and scored some nice goals for Saints before the transfer window, but if he wasn't ready to be an Arsenal supersub???
