What's the water situation? Can you drink from streams if you treat the water with Aqua Mira? |
I drink it straight. However, I drank it straight from the source on the Appalachian Trail (and all over Canada for that matter) where plenty of others wouldn't. Most temples at the base of mountains have springs that you can stock up at. Plus there are usually little shacks on your way up, selling food and drink of sorts so it's not such an issue. |

HERE'S a preview of what you'll get if you head to Ulleungdo. Make sure you have time to kill after you plan to come back. We were stranded there for 24 hours more than we wanted after the sea became choppy. It doesn't have to be very windy and they'll stop all ferries. THIS is as rough as it needs to be.
There's a great walk you can do along the east of the island where there is as yet no road. DIdn't see a single soul the whole trek and got a ride back with some road workers. |

Wow, Ulleung do looks great. My family is coming to visit in a few weeks, and I think Jeju do is too touristy and glammed-out, but we're looking for an adventure. Do you think it'd be appropriate for a couple days for some first timers to Korea? |

yes absolutel. It would be quite an experience for them and one which many Koreans never get, especially if you could also fit in a boat trip to Dokdo so they could see what all that hype is about. Bear in mind though that you could be there longer than you intend i.e. don't plan to return to Seoul the day before their flight home |

Beautiful photos, the saint. If you had your gear, is there some reason you couldn't just put up your tent somewhere until the sea calms down? |

Just bumping this thread, too. It seemed there was quite a bit of interest in doing some hiking get-togethers. I'd be willing to organize one sometime. |

sorry ella life got busy and I didn't get back to you... it's really rocky and very steep hills. Flat places to camp aren't too common. Pretty much all round the coast is small fishing communities. The centre we didn't touch much as it involved hiking and we wanted an easy time of it. There are plenty of minbaks and yeogwans in the two main towns. Getting stuck is only an issue if you have a pressing need to be back on the mainland. |

the saint,
Cool pics man!
I used to do 3-5 day hikes on my own. Now, not so much since I have a son (17 months old now).
when he is older, I plan to bring him on short hikes as the hiking in Korea is spectacular.
I have a weak spot for Jirisan and looking at sunrise or sunset from there....
Korea sure has beautiful landscapes..... |
