I just came across a fairly large, brown spider in my apartment. It made me realize that I have no idea whether or not Korea has any poisonous spiders. Does anyone know? |

I looked up 'poisonous spiders of Korea' in a websearch and this was all I got, not because it's poisonous and harmful/deadly to people, but because at least three times different English teachers over here commented online, with photos, of this spider.
Nephila Clavata (Golden Orb Weaver). It's common to Korea, Japan. In Korea it's called Mudang Commie (Shaman/Fortune Teller Spider). An American spider expert, upon seeing a photo of this Korean spider, says 'there is one genus of this in the U.S. called the Golden Silk Spider or Nephila clavipes'.
In a blog a teacher who was hiking up a mountain near Daegu was surprised to see 3-4 foot wide webs, then 'the large and interesting spiders; gargantuan arachnids...3 inches long'.
These spiders aren't mentioned as being deadly poisonous. Or poisonous at all. Just big and good looking.
The ladies at KNTO (Korean National Tourism Office) headquarters office (02 1330) are always helpful and there's a library room there, too.

Those spiders Captain Kirk posted were on my rooftop last Summer. There were like 6 of them, with webs everywhere. |

They look like the spiders I saw all over the place while hiking in Japan. They may not be poisonous, but their bite does sting like heck. |

well spiders, big and poisonous ones, are NOT part and parcel of anything, where i come from. I am shite scared of anything big and nasty looking. My mum wouldn't be much help either! Cockroaches, spiders, geckos, centidedes, you name it, im scared. Dont even get me started on snakes, cause i have never seen one, ever! so i think i have a fair idea of how i'd react if i did encounter one! Run for the Hills! Anyway, I don't care what anyone thinks, I am a huge *beep* when it comes to creepy crawlies. I give that to the Aussies, I would never move there! |

I've seen snakes twice in Korea. Both times in market areas.
The first time I was with my mate wandering through Dongdaemun market, we ended up in the medicine part. A guy was waffling on about something with a crowd of guys listening. We had a look and he had a microphone taped to his jacket and was basically gesturing toward the snakes he had in buckets and his crotch. My friend and I couldn't help but crack up laughing, he got a little angry and told us to bleep off.
Has anyone seen snakes in Korea? (not in zoos obviously) |

Roll up a newspaper, tw@t the bugger with it and get along with life. Make sure to bang your shoes in the morning before stepping into them. |

Dont come to Korea then. I just killed two tarantulas, a gecko, 3 giant centipedes and one cobra. I wonder if there are any nests in my house. |

Actually, I was about to ask the same question as the OP. I was working out in my garden the other day and I was wondering if I should be on the lookout for any poisonous (as in, poisonous enough to be harmful to people, bignate) arachnids.
I grew up in black widow/brown recluse country, so yeah, I'm a bit of an arachnophobe. |

Yeah loads of cobra's in UK isn't there!!
I always hit them with a newspaper too!!!!!! Does the trick for me preferably The Guardian or News Of The World with additional supplements to give it a real clout, The Sun is largely ineffective in my eyes though!!
Sorry if your not from UK but Stuart Pearce isn't familiar with too many people outside of the place!!!! |
