Being the in -demand person that i am, I usually let mine ring away for at least 20 seconds. Longer if someone important or attractive is calling. Why? because I'm always busy with my exciting social life. If i do answer, i will make sure to speak at the top of my voice in a rushed, "get back to me later" voice.

As you can imagine, this has sent my cred through the roof.

Where did I learn my secret? I just copied the average Korean ajoshi. He knows. Sure, he may be sat there staring into thin air with nothing whatsoever to do- but- any calls to the coalface must be responded to with an irritated blearing shout- usually with a brash pretense to not recognise who is calling. Helps to create the right impression. The man at the centre of operations, the control room has too much going on to talk.
Its only polite.

If you are a princess, just let it ring until it stops. Keep your fans waiting! You have an important life to lead after all.The more your K-pop ringtone echoes through the subway compartment, the more popular you must be. remember: the mirror comes first. All else is irrelevant.

With caller ID, I either answer quickly or not at all.

I abhor ringing phones (something about repetition of sounds that drives me mad) so I either pick up asap or turn off the ringer.

I've never felt the need to prove my importance by waiting to answer my phone until everyone in a two mile radius has realized it's ringing ("Look at me! I'm so important! Someone's calling me!).

Bah.

Gee, I'm grouchy... must be bedtime. Laughing

Bless you, Krats1976! I can't stand the incessant ringing either. I have come to the conclusion that there is a negative correlation between the amount of time a person lets their cell phone ring and their feeling of self-worth. For goodness sake people, learn to put your cell phones on vibrate (insert joke here).

As long as it takes to get it out of my pocket, open it, and push the button. This is a trick question right?

same here.

tho, sometimes i don't answer my land line...i always know if it's a friend or family calling, 'cause the rings will stop at 5 er 6. if it's a korean wrong number, it goes on for 20 rings.

Heh... in my last apartment I stopped answering my phone in the mornings because nobody I wanted to talk to ever called me then, but the same Korean woman would call just about every morning, apparently never realizing she had the wrong number. On a few occasions the phone rang in the morning, I let it go, and it stopped at five or six, and then I'd think, "Damn... that was actually for me..."

Now I have a cell phone, so if I don't recognize the number and am not expecting a call then I don't answer.

beware cellphones, they are a tool of the devil. I was seeing a rather nice K-gal recently. She sent me a tender text message (which i didn't recieve as I was chatting on the phone at the time.) By the time I accidentally found the message and replied 4 days later the gal was so annoyed that i hadn't responded that she won't speak to me now..oops!
If you send a text expecting a reply, technical hitches could sabotage a budding relationship if youre not careful..ahem.

This is slightly off topic, but it reminds me of a great joke I read in Esquire magazine:

"The more annoying the cell phone ring, the more annoying the person."

I never answer my cellphone, because I don't have one.
When I left the UK, I vowed never to have one again and I am glad I don't.

Admittedly, there are times when having one would be useful, but they are few and far between.

Just about the truest thing ever mentioned on this website. With caller ID, I know the person will know I called, so if they don't answer in four or five rings, I hang up. Most of the time, I just text message in case they're in class or whatever.

But Koreans let that phucking thing ring until the cows come home. My phone is always on vibrate outside the house.
